Forums - Nintendo - Do you think Nintendo´s next system could finally be "the new SNES"?

The Wii is now a few months away from turning 3 years old, and despite being the market leader, outselling both HD systems on a regular basis, it still doesn´t have  a library worthy of the clear leader...now, opinions are opinions, and there are a lot of people who prefer the Wii´s library over the others, but what I mean by the title is in relation to the effort and consideration 3rd parties have always given to previous market leaders.

The NES, SNES, PS1 and PS2 were all leaders in their respective generations, and 3rd parties always put their "big, AAA games" on those systems...the SNES, in particular, was to me the very best a Nintendo system could offer (and it´s in my opinion the best system ever)....amazing 1st party titles (that has never changed) + amazing 3rd party titles...practically all the major 3rd parties were putting their AAA content on the SNES...same for the NES, PS1 and PS2.

Now, this current generation has been weird, as putting it simple..the first generation where the market leader isn´t getting the same attention from 3rd parties all previous leaders had...so, we´ve heard it all, 'everyone was caught with their pants down' (true), 'can´t compete with Nintendo´s titles', blah blah blah....but if that´s the case, how come the SNES was so heavily backed by 3rd parties?...the DS is, the GBA was, why can´t the Wii?

Anyway, going into the next generation, maybe a lot of devs and publishers will be expecting a much easier win by Nintendo, therefore putting their best efforts on Ninty´s next home system, maybe bringing us 'the new SNES', the era where you could play Nintendo´s 1st party titles and 3rd parties´ best contents on a single machine.

What do you think?

I think it has 'the potential', but we really need to wait and see the specifics of everyone's next offerings, as well as if we'll see any new players. If Apple were to enter the ring (remember, the iPhone just sold it's BILLIONTH game), then there could be a SERIOUS upset.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

"Ok, girl's trapped in the elevator, and the power's off.  I swear, if a zombie comes around the next corner..."

"If Apple were to enter the ring"

Do you think they might be feeling tempted?

No... there where over one billion softwares downloaded from the app-store... that includes free software and not just games of course ;)

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

i dk if it will happen. Im fearful of "core" propaganda influencing the potential of a clean break next gen. It could happen and i hope it happens but im not so sure whether Nintendo have the brand (SNES era) appeal to reverse the Western 3rd party abandonment effect this gen. I think they will get either the whole mainstream/casual market again or, if theyre not interested anymore in gaming, a
decent slice of traditional gamers who will go wherever the next FF, RE, GTA turns up.

What we know is that brand recognition means shit to core gamers, for mainstream i think Nintendo owns it.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Could possibly be right about 3rd party developers. Hopefully, we will see even more quality titles from 3rd parties on the Wii. It is starting to pick up. I am very interested in Little King's Story!

Is this you not liking the library or just assuming everyone doesn't like the Wii's library?

Pick any genre and the Wii has the best or near best to offer.

Nintendo is a company that evolves and the concept of gaming evolves with them. The SNES was a stage that I highly doubt they will go back to. If gaming is to go to the next level...it wont without Nintendo's creative genius.

Can you please tell me what these games are.  The only one i can think of is Platformer and even then SMG is not great.

EDIT: actually i was wrong about SMG, LBP walks all over it.  So now you have no genre with any possible games that can match the other consoles.
