Forums - Sales Discussion - The Offical August 2007 NPD Thread (data to be released 6:30pm 9/13/2007)

What?

You guys make it sound like the PS3 numbers were off horribly for months on end.

Last time I looked, we were within 3% of NPD for PS3 in July.  I think it is fairly obvious we cover stores that have higher income/more dedicated gamers, given that our data is high for PS3 this month, but tracked 360 better than usual this month.

Price drops increase sales across the board instantly...but places like Walmart vs. Gamestop will see drastically different sales long term in the wake of a price drop.

Ckmlb...of course Bioshock outsold Metroid Prime 3.  Of course all hardware declined besides 360.  360 still has the largest and most active userbase in game purchases.  Take Two announced they have already shipped 1.5 million copies of Bioshock.  360 just had the price drop, nearly 900k units were sold, and the hardware issues were solved.  PS3 sales dropped over 10%/week this month despite Madden.

It isn't like there is a consistant error though (which would indicate bias) in how Vgchartz differs from NPD.  PS3 was over tracked this month, but has been undertracked in other months.

To be fair, the VGC numbers are just USA, and not Canadian numbers, of which, VGC tracks as well.

For Canada, add around 10% for each system. That'd put the PS3 a bit higher (around 145k), and PSP @ 165k. Not perfect and off, but still closer than your assuming.

To add to that, you have to remember also how small ioi's data sample is at the moment. If there is a spike in sales at the stores he collects data from, it will favor certain consoles (in this case, PSP/PS3).

So overall 360 gained about 140k vs original Xbox comparitive month (Aug 03) and about 150k vs PS3.

I'm keeping track of those two things. 360 will be about, almost 1.6 million ahead since PS3 launched and 4.5 million ahead overall.

Versus Xbox 1, ~390,000 ahead. After being 800k behind due to supply shortages after the first two months..So basically since December 05 360 has outsold Xbox1 by about 1.2 million units.

This is also on a weekly basis, 360's second best non-holiday sales month ever. Only 3 non-holiday months were higher, April 06, Jan 07, and June 07. However Jan and June 07 were 5 week NPD months so dont count.

April 06 was the month that 360 finally became un-supply constrained. It sold 295,000 that month. If you look at that month as being artificial because shortages ended, you could say this was 360's highest non-holiday month ever. But technically it is second.

Also, 360 winning by 146,000 in USA makes it tough for PS3 to win worldwide. Even though PS3 has been lengthening it's advantage over 360 in Japan. Probably about by 70,000 last month. That would still leave PS3 with a 76,000 discrepancy they have to make up in Europe, which I strongly doubt.

WII PLAY W/ REMOTE 256.8K
WII METROID PRIME 3: CORRUPTION 218.1K
WII MARIO STRIKERS: CHARGED 147.4K
WII MARIO PARTY 8 138.3K
WII MADDEN NFL 08
NDS BRAIN AGE 2: MORE TRAINING IN MINUTES A
NDS POKEMON DIAMOND VERSION
NDS HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL: MAKIN THE CUT
NDS POKEMON PEARL VERSION

....Which shows that people want to buy the X360 if it works and is cheap.

Microsoft should take note :) Drop the price another $50 MS.....Give us X360>Wii in NPD for a month or two :)

And it's WW not US + Can. Lol, you think Wii did that much? Or DS? Etc. US only? Lol. WW.

These NPD numbers are just US right now, July numbers being listed in this thread are US+Canada.

In short, NPD tracks North America not WW.  The Wii sells that many in the US alone.  Its been hitting around 1m-1.1m WW monthly.

360 doing really well since price drop.

Bioshock killing Metroid Prime.

All hardware went down except 360.

Big PS3 and PSP drops.

Madden PS3 did really well considering.

VG Chartz numbers for PS3 off again significantly.

With these numbers, going back to 600 dollars after the 60 gb run out will be suicide for Sony and back to the levels pre price drop and lower.

Bioshock had a headstart of one week. After this month the attach rate should end up being fairly similar.

US sales in August were nearly $1,000,000,000

life-to-date totals in the U.S. as follows:

  • PS2: 39.1 million
  • PS3: 1.75 million
  • PSP: 8.3 million
  • Xbox 360: 6.3 million
  • Wii: 4 million
  • NDS: 12.7 million

...

"August was Madden month as it usually is, so that isn't surprising," Frazier continued. "It was the biggest introduction month for a new Madden game ever, with over 2.2 million units selling in the U.S. across 8 platforms. It slightly exceeded the sales of the previous record holder, Madden '06, which was introduced in August 2005. And with the next-gen platform games at higher price points, dollar performance was even stronger. Also continuing a trend that we've seen the past several months, Nintendo scored in hardware sales as the Wii and the DS captured the top two spots for the month and the Wii had 4 of the top 10 software items for the month. So Nintendo's strength continues as well."

We also questioned Frazier about the increase in Xbox 360 sales and the slight decline in PS3 sales for the month. Not only does she think that the price cuts boosted the platform, but she also believes the Xbox 360 is in a great position to gain momentum going into this holiday season.

"The price cut had a lot to do with the Xbox 360's success. Looking at the unit sales this year, 360 sales had slowed down quite a bit. From our survey of consumers' attitudes about purchasing new hardware, we know that there are a lot of consumers that do indeed wait for price cuts to make their buying decisions. It's pretty clear that the price cut stimulated sales, and in front of the Halo 3 launch, I think we'll continue to see some pretty strong results through the end of the year for the Xbox 360 platform," she explained.

As for the PS3, Frazier acknowledged that Sony better start moving some hardware at a faster clip before time runs out. "There is no doubt that the window that Sony has to turn this around and bolster their position in the marketplace is narrowing," she said. "With only 4 months left in this calendar year, November and December will be absolutely critical to them to gain more solid ground with the PS3. That said, the story is still not fully written, but it's coming much closer to being so."

I wouldn't say Killing because MP3 was out for 4 days compared to 2 weeks for Bioshock
