Some VGChartz which seems to suggest MGS4 is equally if not more popular than Gears of War:

Despite this is an English languaged forum (relatively many US/UK visitors vs Japanese or German):

874 VGChartz members declared to own MGS4:
http://www.vgchartz.com/games/game.php?id=6970

627 VGChartz members declared to own Gears 1.
410 Gears 2.

You do realize that 360 owners are a minority around here, right?

No, I don't know for sure. I have seen a poll indicating that users around here game more on the PS3 (which would comply well with a recent Nielsen study on a per console basis), but there seem to be a lot of multi-platform owners around here owning a 360 and/or Wii next to a PS3.

You mean this Nielson study?

Nielsen Drops the Ball on Console Usage Numbers

Remember that study of video gamer habits Nielsen released earlier this week showing the Wii in third place and the Playstation 3 in seventh, last even after the GameCube and original Xbox? It was wrong.

Fast Company reports that they've been told that the graph was mislabeled. The real graph, which now appears in the official report and in the image above, shows that the Wii is in second place, after the PS2, for console usage and the PS3 is in fifth place, beating out the GameCube and original Xbox.

Whoops. I hope there aren't any other mistakes in the oft-cited, typically trusted data. Reached for comment this morning, a Nielsen representative said the report does not contain any other errors.

Yes that study, of course the 360 in total usage is used more than the PS3 (over twice the install base for the US in 2008). But also according to this study PS3 users, on a per user basis used their consoles the most compared to all other consoles.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

From what I have seen so far Multiplatform titles perform better on the PS3 compared to the Xbox360 based on each console install base.
There are exception like CoD or GH ( and those exceptions are title that sell a lot negating all the gains in attach rate the PS3 made on titles selling more moderate amounts).

However first party Xbox360 titles perform a lot better than first party PS3 titles, even if you factor in the difference in the install base.

That's the reason the Xbox360 is globally ahead for attach rates....

The top 5 Xbox360 exclusives sold 26.7 million copies or so.

The top 5 PS3 exclusives sold slightly over 16 million copies.

And 16 millions isn't anywhere within 10% of 26 millions...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

The report says that the 360 is used more often as a percentage of TV time (11.4% to 10.6%), for longer per session (78 min to 64 min), and is used more days (7.1 to 6.8) per user.  The only place that PS3 comes out on top is sessions per day (2.42 to 2.15) per user.

Thanks for the link, maybe someone misinterpreted something in previous articles then.

Still this Nielsen comment is striking: "The graph in Figure 2 also visually shows the engagement of the console user with the console via the active user percent. PlayStation 3 console users clearly use their consoles as a group more than any other console type we track."

I guess meaning something like of the different age groups, PS3 users use their console the most (by far when looking at the graph). However children tend to game more than adults and it just so happens the 360 has more children playing. But a 30 year old PS3 user is likely to use his or her PS3 more than a 30 year old 360 user, or an 18 years old PS3 user more than an 18 years old 360 user.

Also interesting that a typical Wii user is 6-11 years old for the US according to Nielsen, just like for the GameCube. I knew this was the case for the GameCube based on a Nintendo study, but I thought it would be a bit different for the Wii. Seems like grandmas and grandpas aren't using their Wii enough to be relevant?

A typical 360 user is 12-17 and a typical PS3 user is a young adult. That's not surprising though.

The attach rate in even higher in the others region. PS3 is outselling the 360 in terms of games.

The argument "having a smaller install base makes it easier" is crap. Bottom line is the games are selling equally on both platforms. So the higher install base of M$ means nothing to developers. It turns out the people buying the games are on the PS3, not the 360. This could also show that the sales number for the 360 are in fact bloated due to the rebuys from RROD and other failures.

One thing I didn't mention (although you probably noticed), is that chart is December 2008 only.  I wish they would give us more data.

Because what teenager could possibly afford a PS3?    Actually, you are probably right because with the 360's lower price, parents buy them for their kids.  If you went by purchaser age, the PS3/360 would be about the same.

Taking that measure maybe Wii purchasers are the oldest, as in general I don't think 6-11 year olds buy consoles for themselves, they get them from Santa.

When the 360 was priced 119 Euros (including 19% taxes) around here for the holiday season a lot of preteen boys seem to have gotten a 360 instead of a Wii from Santa or Sinterklaas (half the price of a Wii during the holiday period).

Oh well, in due time the PS3 will be less expensive and they can graduate to a PS3.

Why would they need a PS3 if they already have a 360?
