Forums - Sony Discussion - Why the PS3 still hasn't been hacked.

Realistically, the PS3 is (probably) as weak to the original hack that worked on both the XBox 360 and Wii where the disc-drive was "tricked" into thinking that a writeable disc was an original game disc ... the problem with this is that you still need the disc image to retain its signing, and Sony's immediate reaction to this would be to release all PS3 games on dual-layer Blu-Ray discs and to fill all the space with garbage before signing the image. While people might be willing to download GTA over a 4 week period its unlikely that you would get many people that motivated to download other games ...

Beyond that, the secondary problem is that (even with getting the PS3 to play unsigned games) it has the same problems that kept the Gamecube from being modded for so long ... The disc format is expensive enough to lower the percentage of people interested in stealing games, the userbase is small, and there is more money in making a better mod for another console than there is in cracking the PS3.

Edit: There is one other thing that has limited PS3 hacking ... (For some unknown reason) there are several really smart people who want to run linux on everything, and since the PS3 can have linux installed on it these people where not looking to find and publish exploitable hacks which are (often) turned into viable mods.

I hope that's true, that the disc space of Blu ray can potentially reduce the risk of the PS3 getting hacked (or making it be unpractical as you're describing). It would be kinda cool if Blu ray payed off like that versus the X360 and DVD.

Also, the relatively high cost of blank Blu ray discs is a factor, that's what you're saying rite? I Agree, since pirates are by nature very cheap lol.

I dunno if the Linux argument has any significance though. Hackers usually are quite immoral people, I dont think a big proportion of them are some kind of altruistic Linux-promoters. Most hackers are in it for the principle, they hack everything that can be hacked, including the PS3.

@vaio - If it's not in the public domain and hasn't been confirmed by the scene then it's not been hacked at all. Also this story of running games off the HDD has been around for 2 years and still we see no sign of it working.

I´ve tried it but as I said it wasn´t stable enough for the public and since then they shifted their focus to Wii games running from a hardrive and SD card.

I am sure there are others out there still trying but I would also imagine they also put more work into the other consoles instead.

Just because it isn´t in your public domain doesn´t mean it doesn´t exist.

Also to state it´s unhackable when it actually has been hacked is incorrect thats why I dropped in with this info, theese are people that are proud of their work and they put in a lot of time in theese things and they will never release something that is unstable especially when it can also brick your PS3 (although this is extremly rare it still happens).

My giess is that now when the rest of Sony´s big hitters are on their way we will see a big focus shift in the hackers community to finish the work and get it out there.

I also want to point out that because they have come this far doesn´t mean they will actually be able to perfet it (I personally think they will) but the mutter still stands it´s been hacked and it was some time ago but not to the level so they feel comfortable to make a public release.

I can also say that the PS 3 has been the hardest console ever to hack (so far) so Sony did a hell of a job to try and make it hack proof and they almost suceeded.

I hope they never hack the PS3.

But about X360 hacking, does it still need a mod chip combined with many hours to reset?

AFAIK they are flashing something into DVD drive firmware and it's even easier than PS2 era - at least comparing online prices for both hacks :)

IMHO the reason why PS3 is still seeing tons of 3rd party support despite smaller sales is lack of piracy on the system.

Could be, from another point of view: it's strange that the software attachrate is still so high for the X360 versus the PS3, it's as if there is not much piracy at all for the X360.

Until any group releases it to the scene then it's not hacked, that's fact.  This is what the article is saying, they're are too many groups unwilling to help each other for anything to ever be released in the near future.  If you want to believe your friend that's fine but don't go around announcing to the world it's been done when it hasn't.

@Slowmo I'm not saying that I believe vaio , but I do believe that there are exploits for consoles which aren't in the public domain for various reasons. They might not have taken advantage of the exploit fully , also exploiting the system enables hackers to understand the security behind the system so even if that particular exploit is blocked the hackers still have a backdoor (which is exactly why Sony have strugled so much with the PSP)

But I dought what Vaio has said for the very reason that hacker groups generaly want to show proof of concept , a video or something that at leasts prooves that they are doing something groundbreaking , worthwhile.

@NinjaKido - I've heard all too many false dawns of breakthroughs before on other consoles so you can understand the pessissm.  The not stable for release is a classic excuse used, not saying thats the case here but with no proof of concept there is no way you can make the claim the PS3 has been hacked.

I had a hacked PS1 and was about to hack my PS2 but it was hard!!!

According to "PS3-hacks" there was a time when there where 330,000 hack groups

working to crack the PS3 protection!!..so what does that means?

PS3 is from the future confirmed

That is a ridiculous number. 330,000 hack groups? and "there was a time"? When was this time? Assuming each "group" was just 2 members, you're thinking at 660,000 people minimum were working to crack the PS3 at some point in the past? How long ago? 6 months? a year? On an install base of 10-15m units? Not a chance.

And if PS3 is from the future, that means Skynet has sent it back to kill us.

No it´s nota fact because you have no access to it.

Believe me or don´t I don´t get any trophies or achievements for this, just thought I would give you as much correct info as possible, it´s been a while since I was at my friends helping him out as I my self have alot of work learning about waninkos program running Wii games from a harddrive or SD card.

I believe my friend because not only have i seen it and have even played it and I can also add that it crashed after about 20-30 mins gameplay and thats the reason you won´t see it untill they perfect it and I can bet my life on that there are other hackers out there that has come further then my friend and his team. They all do this for fun and to learn (but mostly I think it´s for the bragging rights).

But go ahead and believe it´s not hacked att all and continue this thread based on false assumptions, just remember I said so when the hack is finished and delivered, as you know that doesn´t work over a night to get it perfect and safe.

The same thing happenend with the Wii and 360 I was able (through them) to test and play games through both chip and softmod way before it ws available to you, does that mean it didn´t exist and I didn´t get to try it out before you were aware of it?

I did this so you could continue to argue about this with the corret info instead of basing the whole thread that it hasn´t been hacked.

It would be a more interesting discussion if we/you continued this thread based on the actuall progress in the mutter and not on wishful thinking or because you have no acces to the releant info about this.

But if you think I am lying and wish to continue to discuss this topic an a flawed premiss then go ahead and ignor my posts as my only intention was to spread correct info about the topic as I do with other things here on VGC when I start threads, it´s allways about spreding the information out and killing missinformation.

The truth of the mutter is it´s been hacked but not to the level so we can use it properly.

If I insulted you or others then I am sorry but I thought you would value actuall info about the mutter based on reality and not on info that isn´t accurate and hasn´t been for a 1+ year.

This is the last I have to say about this unless you actually have any questions I might be able to answer or get the answers too.

Again sorry if it offended anyone and I would kindly ask that you do not call me a liar when I only wanted to inform you guys about this and how far they have come.
