Forums - Gaming Discussion - OMG!!!CELL can do realtime RAYTRACING with just software!!!!

ookaze said: OMG Washimul !!!! Do you even UNDERSTAND what you read ? I'd advise you to go take some classes in english reading and computing, so you at least understand what you read there. You're COMPLETELY off-base here ! What IBM did, is basically what I did in school for one of my projects, 10 years ago. The PS3 was just the "manager" in a distributed environment of machines (a renderfarm), made mostly of QS20 blades and PS3. Read this carefully : THE MAIN PS3 DID NOT RENDER ANYTHING in this experiment. That's basically a cluster of machines (QS20 and PS3) that did the rendering, so this is NOT ONE PS3 making the rendering. When you'll understand that, perhaps you will start to understand how you look like a moron for spouting such nonsense as "CELL is around 10 000x more powerful than a dual core INTEL CENTRINO". This gem alone is enough to know you don't have a clue about computing, processors or anything coming close to them. As for heavenly sword, what is the link between "PLAYSTATION EDGE + RSX+ CELL" and a screenshot of a Heavenly Sword cutscene ?
u Bu*****. IRT is the default raytracer which is being used with the CELL BE. on the other hand the laptop with CENTRINO used 3d max as the default raytracer. http://www.gametomorrow.com/minor/barry/iRT-Sumary.pdf thts IRT for you...... the interactive raytracer for CELL (title).

everyone should READ this before commenting:- Comment by Barry Minor — March 8, 2007 @ 11:01 am To put this render job in perspective I just ran one frame of this scene through 3dsMax’s default ray-tracer an it took my Centrino Duo (dual core x86) machine one hour eight minutes to render what Cell and the iRT renders in less than one half of a second. CELL +irt = 1/2 seconmd CENTRINO + 3dmax = 1 hour 8 minutes. result :_ CELL+ irt completed a task 10000 x faster than 3dmax+CENTRINO http://gametomorrow.com/blog/index.php/2007/03/07/cell-power-at-gdc-2007/

It's like you want your threads to be locked. I'm not gonna lock this(yet), because I agree with what Ben said: Even though the presentation is absolutely horrid, you do have some content. Your title needs some serious work, however. And I'm not kidding. That title is awful. Please remember that so future threads don't get locked. And I'm watching this thread pretty closely. Here's a fresh demo of my Arauna raytracer: http://www.bik5.com/arauna_demo2.zip Instructions: 1. Unzip and run arauna_supersampling.exe to measure peak performance (~11M on my machine); 2. Open scene.txt and add '//' to the fifth line (speedtest); 3. Run arauna.exe to walk around the scene. Keys: A, S, D, W to walk forward/backward and strafe; cursor keys to rotate the camera; R and F to move down and up (reversed, sorry, forgot to fix). That's the basic stuff; there's more to try out using scene.txt, have a look at the file to see what's possible.
washimul do you ever know what you're talking about? Edit: BTW, that demo runs on my Athlon 64 X2 3800+ and is far more complex than the demo I saw running on a Pentium 3 ... If the Cell really was 1,000 times as powerful as conventional CPUs we should be seeing Resistance: Fall of Man being raytraced ...

the Aurana demo runs at 1 fps ......u are comparing that to CELL...............what a shame. did you read the links i provided???? atleast know something before posting. This is what Barry said regarding raytacing http://gametomorrow.com/blog/index.php/2007/03/07/cell-power-at-gdc-2007/To put this render job in perspective I just ran one frame of this scene through 3dsMax’s default ray-tracer an it took my Centrino Duo (dual core x86) machine one hour eight minutes to render what Cell and the iRT renders in less than one half of a second. do u get an idea of how powerful the CELL is : 1 hour 8 minutes on DUAL CORE CENTRINO translates to just half a second on CELL MODS :- i just posted valid links and still u have people arguing unnecessarily. SQUIRREL..........u wd be seeing full fledged RAYTRACING in ps3 games by the end of JUNE..............fingers crossed

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lr-R4bUZIQw CELL raytracing at 720p at 60fps.............pc cores can do 1 fps.........at best http://www.gametomorrow.com/minor/barry/iRT-Sumary.pdf IRT beefs up CELL perf by 100x http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/image-vp528232.html http://gametomorrow.com/blog/index.php/2005/11/30/gpus-vs-cell wow a CELL otguns 7800gtx by a margin of 6:1 in raytracing. With IRT 8800gtx would be outgunned by a margin of 1000: 1. http://gametomorrow.com/blog/index.php/2007/03/07/cell-power-at-gdc-2007 with IRT CELL alone can output graphics like UT3. + if you add the EDGE uget SHREK 2

SENTINEL have you been atleast reading the links i provided. Those are from MC, UC, IBM and MIT..............i havent invented anything by my own. look at all the links i provided before making comments UPDATE :- CELL now does 1080p raytracing with IRT This week at Game Developers Conference IBM will show a Linux based PS3 real-time rendering a complex (3 million triangle) urban landscape, at 1080p resolution, using only software rendering techniques (iRT).

Well, the demo runs at 12fps on my system and has been reported to run at over 60fps on an Intel Core 2 Extreme ... Now, since you don't bother reading and understanding your links here is an important quote:
Using IBM’s scalable iRT rendering technology, the PS3 is able to decompose each frame into manageable work regions and dynamically distribute them to blades or other PS3s for rendering.
Which means that the cell on the PS3 was only doing scene-graph management off loading the majority of the work to blade servers ... Now, surpringly enough they didn't mention the type or quantity of blade servers they were using ... Being that this was IBM they have access to a lot of high quality servers so I wouldn't be surprised to find out that it was 12-24 blade servers each with 1 or 2 Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors running at 2.33 GHz ... This would mean that 12 - 48 Quad core intel processors can outperform a dual core processor what a shocker!

Credible sources should be a given--the point is you need a proper presentation. In fact, saying something like that reduces your credibility, since you need to relegate your convincing to the sources. We all know the PS3 is powerful, so why won't I just google if it's a bunch of links that I want.
