Forums - Sales - Most importantly, who here likes Atari? (or another retro company)

Commodore 64 and Amiga. I had them and I loved them. And I saw them crush Atari.

I like Atari.... but the company lack version back in the mid 80s and 90s and even a little bit now, I think to myself that the bosses at Atari saw gaming as a kids toy.  Their brought out rubbish after rubbish and never learned from they mistakes.

The Atari 2600 was a great console for its time and was sold for over 10 years.  The Lynix was another great handheld, it had colours and good sound but lacked battery life and was pulled and not supported.

They release the Atari ST which was a great 16-bit computer but forgot to add that little chip that made side scrolling in game smooth and with only 16 colours on screen at any time for games.  Unlike that Amiga 500 which had a chip deicated to side scrolling and 32 colours on screen.

The good thing about SONY is that the PS3 had a really bad start but SONY contined to support the machine and will contine to support it long into the future, unlike what Atari and Sega did with their machines (just dropped them like a brick).

PC gaming rules.....

I had an 800XE, an ST, and a an Intellivision. I have fond memories of all of them.

The the Atari name and logo is the best of any company I can think of with the Go reference. An apt reference for a game company seeing as it's probably one of the most complex well known games in existence.

I do want to see Atari come back and bring out a new console.  I can't see a reason not too but Im sure they have learned from their mistakes of old.

PC gaming rules.....

I loved playing on my Atari 2600 back in the day. I somehow lost it through the years but I still have fond memories. I understand the lack of quality led to the video game crash but I never can comprehend why since I love gaming so much. The video game market never felt ruined to me or crashed (although I was very young even when the NES was released so that is probably why) Without Atari ruining the market in the early 80s, Nintendo would have never filled the gap. So in a way Atari helped Nintendo into the market.

You're not alone here richardhutnik..

I've been playing videogames since the 2nd generation.
I then progressed to Amiga systems, Commodore, PC games and the Nes.

Atari made home gaming popular. What happened is really sad.

Still got all of my systems including the Jaguar and the Amiga CD32! :D

@GamingChartzFTW, watch out the little kids that grew up on PS1 might think PS1 made home console gaming popular since PS1 was the first to sell 100+ million. I tried to educate them but their ignorance was too great.

SEGA.... Dreamcast was my friend :(

I believe a bulk of the lovers of Sony got their start with the original Playstation.  Their only memory of carts are with the Gameboy most likely.  Things go WAY back there, even prior to the NES.  Atari used to be the king, ended up in the movie Blade Runner, with a sign in the background.  Back in that day, arcades were also the shapers of desire, as arcade games are where you happened to test a game out, and the popular ones are what helped sell consoles.  This was before they even had videogame rentals.

I've never played an Atari system, but they were damn popular and I'd of course like to use one someday. According to numbers I've seen, the 2600 sold around 31 million units or something, which would mean it's still the best-selling American console ever.

I should also add that my sister thought Atari was a Japanese company until I told her.
