*Sigh* Why do people hate FF12 so much, I liked it, as in really liked it. It was EPIC, it felt like FF (medival feel), It had moogles saying "kupo" (which reminded me of 6), Its gameplay was GOOD, STRATEGIC, REALISTIC and Mature (when people fight, they dont hop up and down waiting for a bar to fill)! The boss fights were epic! (That wrym in the Viera Jungle gave me hell)! And the Espers were so cool, both when fighting (unlocking) and summoning them. I mean seriously the fight with Belias (when my party members were like lvl. 18) was boss battle material. And Baltheirs epic one-liners. Geez, this game was good! People who hate it arent fair! Turned based aside that game PAWNED!

I think the gameplay merchanics are very small aspect of what makes pokemon succesful ( Pokemon brand name , concept , fanbase etc ) games from various genres have sold well on the pokemon name Cardgames , pinball , photography etc.

I don't think that FFXII caused a major downfall in the popularity of Turn based games so much as it caused a percieved downfall in popularity because one of the most popular JRPG series switched from being Turn based. Pokemon and Dragon Quest are still extremely popular, so honestly I don't really see the downfall of turn based JRPG's like others do.

what jRPGS are popular outside FF, KH and DQ?
"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)
"WAR is a racket. It always has been.
It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

Pokemon
I LOVE turn based JRPG's
That's why I like Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon so much.
So for me they're still alive :)
If Final Fantasy 12 and Kingdom Hearts are to blame, why was FF12 the lowest-selling Final Fantasy since #6? FF7, FF8, FF9, FF10, and even that awful FF10-2 all sold more than FF12. Not to mention, all of these games also outsold Kingdom Hearts AND Kingdom Hearts 2! (Well, if we get really technical, Kingdom Hearts outsold FF10-2 and FF9, but only by a very small amount.)
There are legitimate reasons why Japanese RPG sales are declining, but the premise in the initial post is seriously flawed.
End of 2008 totals: Wii 42m, 360 24m, PS3 18.5m (made Jan. 4, 2008)

I'm sorry but I find it diffucult to classify pokemon as a jRPG. Pokemon is just pokemon....maybe we should have a new genre called monster collection or something
