Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo: core gamers can`t never be satisfied

I don't care about these definitions what I want to see on Wii are more high quality jrpgs and action adventure games. If Wii Fit and Wii Sports are now core, I don't buy some core games and other core games I don't open and sell on ebay.

Heavens to Murgatoids.

The problem with core games is that the standard has changed this generation -- it has lowered, actually. Games like God of War, GTA and Halo were never considered hardcore games until now. The Wii has plenty of true hardcore games on it if you just take the time to look for them. The Wii's biggest problem has always been it's quality not being up to standard, not a lack of core games.

The Wii is, without a doubt, a bad console. But like all bad, low quality consoles before it, it has hardcore games on it.

Ha, the Wii is not a low quality console. Here are some low quality (or at least flawed) consoles:

X360
PS2
N64
PS1

Poorer graphical capabilities don't stop the parts being quality.

I agree with the PS1 and PS2. The PS1 is even worse than the Wii.

But the 360 and N64? The 360 is ok and the N64 was very good.

The 360 has technical problems that arguably exceed even those the PS2 had, the N64 was brilliant at topping the PS1 in the polycount, but the hardware was difficult to work with and the PS1 games usually has much better resolutions which meant some games look better on PS1 despite the power difference. (this may have been partly the use of cartridges fault)

I am  talking quality of the consoles here, not the quality of it's games library. Although to be honest I don't see the X360 as having many decent games at all, so I would put that one low on a software aspect too (and that's if you get to play the game without it scratching the disc or something)

Just curious...What was considered a hardcore game before then? I used to play pretty random stuff and never really cared about it what it was.

This generation the meaning of hardcore game has been changed into good game. That's all it means now.

Back then, hardcore actually meant hardcore. Games like Fire Emblem, Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry are example of what we considered to be hardcore games. Hardcore games take skill and detication. Play the original Mega Man games lol.

Wii fans are so different than we GameCube fans were. We would have never considered something like MadWorld to be hardcore. That would have just been looked at as an average action game meant to appeal to teens with low attention spans that need to feel cool. Things were so different back then... GTA was basicly the Wii Sports of that era and all of it's clones were the idiotic mini-games lmao.

There was a completely different mindset back then.

He's got a point. Last gen GTA, Madden, and realistic driving simulators were the "casual" games and were often trashed, and the people that played those games exclusively were mocked and looked down on. Actually, shooters got bashed a lot too, especially on the Xbox.

Let's just say it was a complete 180 when this forum was flooded with "OMGgta4 is teh best game i hav evr playd from just teh 1st 10 min!!!11"

That's a pretty terrible interview excerpt. Kaigler is combative and interrupting. She leads the interviewer into making her point, but its not a good point.

The core isn't satisfied because there aren't many traditional, content-oriented games that rank among the best on the console, or decidedly better than past gens. If you look at past "winning" consoles, they all have 8 or 10 different traditional, content-oriented series that are the biggest sales drivers, and were considered to be "game changers" or "bar raisers". The core wants to experience content, while most of the top games on Wii are oriented around a social experience, or starting with Wii Fit, a practical purpose.

Just list out all the traditional, content-oriented series which were considered to be "raising the bar" when they came out.

NES had:
1. Mario
2. Zelda
3. Metroid
4. Mega-Man
5. Final Fantasy
6. Dragon Quest

SNES had:
1. Mario
2. Zelda
3. Metroid
4. Final Fantasy
5. Dragon Quest
6. Donkey Kong Country
7. Street Fighter
8. Star Fox
9. Mario Kart

PS1 had:
1. Gran Turismo
2. Final Fantasy
3. Crash Bandicoot
4. Tekken
5. Resident Evil
6. Tomb Raider
7. Metal Gear Solid
8. Tony Hawk

PS2 had:
1. Grand Theft Auto
2. Gran Turismo
3. Final Fantasy
4. Need for Speed
5. Metal Gear Solid
6. Kingdom Hearts
7. Medal of Honor
8. Ratchet and Clank
9. EA Sports

And on Wii? It has plenty of the old "raising the bar" type franchises. But some of them, like Metroid, Animal Crossing and Zelda, Nintendo failed to raise the bar this time. Some, like the EA Sports games, Need for Speed, Medal of Honor, Call of Duty, are either totally collapsing, or utilizing the HD systems to raise the bar, and leaving Wii with leftovers. The full list of traditional, content-oriented games which have been received by the core as "raising the bar" on Wii is:

1. Mario
2. Mario Kart
3. Smash Bros.

The "moving goalposts" comes from frustration and disappointment with Nintendo. Some look to the old franchises to up the ante for the first time in a decade. Some look to all-new franchises to be treated with reverence, instead of just to round out the lineup. Some give up on Nintendo and turn to third parties.

Personally, I'm entirely satisfied with Wii. But I had one foot out the door before Wii showed up. If you look at the PS2's list up there, other than GTA, none of the games are as big a game changer as many of the games on the first three lists. It was becoming harder to raise the bar with content-oriented games, and HD may be the last chance to do so. But I've really enjoyed social-oriented games like Rock Band and Wii Sports, and so a balance of those with Galaxy and Brawl has been perfect for me.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

well the games they do are the best so I am satisfied. As a Nintendo fan I have learned to wait and wait and wait to get the best!

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

nintendo needs to release a new wii zelda, metroid, a rpg from monolith , and make a sequel to eternal darkness for me to forgive nintendo for such a crappy year as 2008, mario kart and super smash bros:brawl were very good. but i need my zelda and now.

More importantly, they need to release a zelda game with decent difficulty. Playing Twilight Princess on the only difficulty it offers is like playing DOOM3 on it's easiest difficulty. Okami is an even worse offender when it comes to being too easy.

This,

@ OP , i did not imagine i see the day that Nintendo complain about their old fans the "Core" gamers, what she is saying that nintendo is rereleasing old games, what he as a core gamer want is that Nintendo to make the old games grow andf evolve, and not just be revamped on Virtual console...

and the last part is confusing, is she taunting him with rhythim heaven? that ds game on wii ? , what so cool about that?
