The massive Sony fronted marketing budget made the difference. Without it Final Fantasy would be just like DQ. Also you said it made "RPGS popular" when it didnt. DQ being a Japanese only phenomena proves this. Though only thing Sony's 100 million dollar camaign did was make Final Fantasy popular. There are 3 RPG series only with universal appeal. Pokemon, Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts. It made nothing popular but Final Fantasy. Games like Persona for example owe nothing to FF7. |
you are right. I did say "made RPGs popular" which may give too much power and credit to FFVII. But the game made a pretty big damn difference compared to any other JRPG.
FF now has GLOBAL appeal due to the FFVII(Whether it also bid on Sony's massive marketing campaign). It doesn't matter whether ALL JRPGs now sell millions or not.
The facts are...
Americans and PAL territories were not that interested in JRPGs before VII
JRPGs became more popular their after it.
FFs now sell more on a regular basis. They are JRPGs. So JRPGs sell more now.
EDIT:
Also, Gamers such as myself never looked twice at RPGs before FFVII came along. FFVII paved the way for me getting interested in them(now they are my fav genre. I have Persona 3 and 4 and love them).
Greatness Awaits
