Forums - General - Let's give a thanks to the troops!

Well I take this seriosly.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart too all our fighting men and women.

Around the Network

I would like to offer my thanks to all the troops and veterans of all wars to preserve the freedoms of anybody anywhere. This includes people who fought for America and people who fought against America, depending on the war.

If you fought a war for anything else, don't be mad at me for thinking you're worthless scum.

I would also like to extend my sympathy to those other troops who joined up to preserve freedoms but were tricked into fighting drug wars, oil wars, religion wars, and/or regime changes. I'm sorry, it wasn't your fault, your hearts were in the right places, and you were lied to. Better luck next time, suckers.

So are you going to put people's names on a "Doesn't Hate the Troops" list if we post in here?

Also, "Americans (and our allies) are put in harm's way" and I respect them for it.
Yea Fan, because this thread is all about you.

Nice way to start.
Just shut the fuck up. We both know exactly why you made this thread, and you're right, it's not about me, it's about akuma587 and your belief that he hates the men and women of the armed forces.
It's a place for people to give thanks to the troops, and an opportunity for Akuma to change my view of him all at the same time.

Why would you take this attitude in this thread? Damn man. Usually it takes 2-3 pages to derail a thread. This time it took 1 post.

It infuriates me that you would use a thread SUPPOSEDLY about giving kudos to brave soldiers as a Trojan horse for your hatred* of anyone who DOESN'T give them.  That is true disrespect, and you ought to be ashamed of such a tactic.

* (or contempt? I don't want to assign the wrong emotion to your motivation but it's somewhere in that vicinity I think.)

I agree to a point.  If his motivation was simply to play "gotcha" with someone because he dislikes them then yes I agree it is a petty mockery of a serious issue.  But if his motivation was that he had an issue with that person's views on the issue of respect for soldiers specifically than it seems reasonable that he would be as infuriated by a perceived lack of respect as you are infuriated by what you view as a big "gotcha game".

Ultimately I have no idea what he meant by it any more than he probably knows someone else's true feelings towards troops from a few posts of commentary. The thread is redundant to me for the simple fact that any person who doesn't respect the men and women who put their life on the line for their country (whichever country that is) are pretty irrelevant to me to begin with.

With that said there are no bad reasons to give credit and respect where it is due.

@Topic,

/Salute

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. You already finished the popcorn...now you're going for the bag?

I believe that respect does need to be payed to the soldier and veteran, as long as they are honest men doing what they believe is best by their country.

Not all soldiers fit that description and a small group sometimes give the larger a bad name.

I also think that sometimes not enough respect is payed to those who are defeated, the German veterans from WWII and the American veterans from Vietnam for example. They were also largely honest men fighting for their country, even if the wars they fought in were not justified it wasn't their fault.

I respect the Australian military even though I don't respect most of the "wars" they fight or war in general. Is that hypocrisy? probably but the world isn't a black and white place.

@Farmland.

Nah, its easy to respect the soldiers, just not the people who order them to fight.

I pretty much agree with Rath.

I think we should institute a reverse draft. The older and whiter you are, the more likely you will be picked first in the draft. We would never fight another war again!

Can't tell if you're being serious or not sometimes =P

Either way the only credible data I was able to find online says that whites are represented proportionally and that on the whole recruits come from above average income neighborhoods and above-average income households while holding above-avarage educations.

The data also suggested that this trend was a positive one with recruits coming from wealthier backgrounds, with better educations over time.

As for age...well there are legitimate practical reasons for why that would only work to a point but if my experience with old white ex-military men like my father are any indication they would gladly break a hip trying to do just that if they were excepted back.  Although to be completely honest I don't really think from my recollection that them being white had anything to do with it, I know many of the people who worked for my father in the Air Force whether it was black, white, latino, asian, etc... and didn't seem to make a difference in the way they felt, and still feel, about their work and their duty.
