I agree to a point. If his motivation was simply to play "gotcha" with someone because he dislikes them then yes I agree it is a petty mockery of a serious issue. But if his motivation was that he had an issue with that person's views on the issue of respect for soldiers specifically than it seems reasonable that he would be as infuriated by a perceived lack of respect as you are infuriated by what you view as a big "gotcha game".
Ultimately I have no idea what he meant by it any more than he probably knows someone else's true feelings towards troops from a few posts of commentary. The thread is redundant to me for the simple fact that any person who doesn't respect the men and women who put their life on the line for their country (whichever country that is) are pretty irrelevant to me to begin with.
With that said there are no bad reasons to give credit and respect where it is due.
