I believe that respect does need to be payed to the soldier and veteran, as long as they are honest men doing what they believe is best by their country.
Not all soldiers fit that description and a small group sometimes give the larger a bad name.
I also think that sometimes not enough respect is payed to those who are defeated, the German veterans from WWII and the American veterans from Vietnam for example. They were also largely honest men fighting for their country, even if the wars they fought in were not justified it wasn't their fault.
