Forums - Sales - Why DS and PSP sell less software?

The Attach Ratio for Both are really low, we have even some strange stuff like PSP hardware outselling PSP software at Others. What i don't understand, because they're handhelds and people have more time to play, so they shoulded buy more software than for home consoles. The only place where they have a normal software selling is Japan, and other strange situation is the 25 million japanese DS have sold 120 million games, and 75 million of western Ds have sold only 250 million games.

How is the DS software low? I always thought DS had great software numbers.

Well for one thing, PSP software is largely undertracked. However, when it comes to handhelds as a whole, it's fairly simple. Those who only own handhelds (whether they be the DS, PSP, or both) are usually very casual, and don't buy as many games. People who buy more games and view gaming as a hobby usually own a home console and give their handhelds less attention. That said, the DS sells a lot of software regardless of attach rates.

Don't forget, DS and PSP runs rampant with piracy...

R4 DS and CFW PSP.

Bigass Consoles are harder to pirate on.

Piracy.

Keep in mind Japanese data is much more complete that other regions.

The PSP attach rates are in line with GB and GBA attach rates if you go by shipments. DS attach rates are about 30% higher per machine, and the base is twice as big (~100m DS shipped vs. ~50.3m PSP through March 6). Through December there were 536m DS games shipped for 96m DS, so the attach rate is about 5.5. PSP through January when Sony said the systems shipments topped 50m, has an attach rate of four since they claimed 200m games shipped.

With much less time on the market, Wii and PS3 software/hardware shipment rates are about 7 each.

This.

As said, the older consoles are missing more data for PAL/America than the newer ones... and DS/PSP are both older than the 3 home consoles.

Handhelds have always previously had lower attach ratios than home console for the other reasons Montana has stated.... the real (don't look at VGC) full games per console for the DS is actually a good deal higher than past handhelds. (by over 1.5 games, and will probably end over 2 games higher)

The PSP ratio is in reality similar to past handhelds... although past handhelds it was more the nature of them, while the PSP has a lower ratio because people both hack it, or use it more for other media than games.

Edit: The SOurce has said some of what I have already.
