Forums - Sales - What do you think of "Star Ocean: The Last Hope" sales?

I think it's rather premature (still) to argue where SO4 is going to be at in terms of American LTD sales.

However, looking at Blue Dragon, Star Ocean 4 had a much better 2nd week - it's up 7,000 units (23k to 30k). Blue Dragon had a similar opening (BD @ 60k, SO4 @ 65k), and Blue Dragon had great legs - it managed a 6x multiplier.

So if we want to only go with 2 weeks of data, it should trend like Blue Dragon, and hit 390,000 in North America. Far cry from SO3 in NA, but not nearly as bad as your 250k prediction.

You could be right, but I think BD sales only did that because it was really the only JRPG available on the 360 until Lost Odyssey arrived.

The fact that Star Ocean is pretty much Enix's flagship series in the Americas and is possibly going to be beat by new IP's isn't good in my opinion.

It was also in some weird bundles.

Not saying it accounting for all it's sales, but still. It's a weird bundle.

And so far, SO will have similar legs to LO, but it's still 40% below.

I also think Blue Dragon good sales have to do with MS's overshipment of the game. We saw it at $20 less than six months after release.

"sales" doesn't matter
"shipments" does

Agreed, but that doesn't help with sales on future releases.

agreed.

port it SE damnit

http://www.feelplus.jp/works-v2.html

As you can see Feelplus, a Microsoft studio, helped with the SO4 development.

I doubt it'll get ported.

:(

I'm still hoping though because SE didn't rule out a possible port or did they?

SquareEnix continues to make an ass out of itself.

lol, this should be in ur sig

what do you think?

haha, I predict profile views are gonna see a big boost lol

I think in NA they can sell over 400k within 1 years in Japan 350k in PAL 250k , life time sell should be 1 million or higher

Game sold only 60k first week, in order to hit 400k, let alone 300k you have to expect this game to have legs comparable or better than a Final Fantasy.

I am not sure if JRPGs other than Final Fantasy ever had those kind of legs.

Anyone know of a JRPG with legs that allowed it to have lifetime sales 500-600% better than launch week sales in Americas?

See natural of rpg sales in NA you can estimate sales number. And you must plus install base around 12 milion at the end of year.

Very nice chart there.

Mr. Stickball said pretty much the same thing.

Is it worth it for S-E/Namco to sacrfice their franchises fanbase just for some extra cash (that MS gave to them)?

It's impossible to tell because we dont know what MS gave them. We can only speculate.

If new 360 exclusives from these companies will appear then it definitely was worth it for them. But right now I'd say it was considering namco's comments on ToV sales and SE's will to keep their 360 support in Japan.

I know we will never know whether its worth it or not for them.

But my point is.....is it worth drastically reducing your fanbase.....not looking at LONG TERM & franchise expansion just for the sakes of MS's extra money

now I'm not against FF13 going multiplat....or such games.....as they are "expanding" their fanbase

but keeping JRPG's exclusive to 360 lowers japanese sales & fanbase.....in fact when they should be trying to expand the base

also S-E is talking as if PS3 has sold 0 consoles in NA/EU......n only 360 is present there

when in fact its sold around 17 million at the least

Cutting your fanbase is undeniably bad. But the thing is: they probably didnt really have a choice. Everyone tries to look at this as if SE's top managers are greedy bastards that dont care for the company (mhm.. http://kotaku.com/5165346/square-enix-execs-take-self+imposed-pay-cut )

But the way I see it SE has just put too much hope on one console. As funny as it may sound now but SE really wanted PS3 to dominate the market. Otherwise they wouldnt have announced 2 enourmously huge projects for it at the same time.

But when it's become clear that PS3 isnt going to even remotely dominate SE had to change its plans. The engine that originally was meant to only work with PS3 had to be made multiplatform and a lot of other expensive changes had to be made. SE had to find money to fund all that and they had to do it fast. Microsoft came in handy with their offers.

Indeed it is.

Rei, do you have any opinion as to why there´s no "only on 360" on the cover?...Am I right to assume that´s a hint at a possible future port?

First I read about Atlus yesterday and now you show me this.

I am upset now. S-E needs to go with a complete multiplatform strategy from here on out.

If I had to guess whether there will be a PS3 port or not I'd say that there will. But "only on 360" stamp doesnt mean much as there were games with it on the cover that have gone multiplat, and games without it that have not.

Europe had SO3 sales around 90k, for those asking...
