Crytek announce CryEngine 3 for PC, consoles and multiple genres

Crytek have announced they will be showcasing their latest “all-in-one game development solution” CryEngine 3, at this year’s GDC Expo (March 25th – 27th) in San Francisco.

They boast that CryEngine 3 will be the first development platform for 360, PS3, MMO, and DX9/DX10 that’s also truly Next-Gen ready - with scalable computations and graphics, tools designed by and for professional developers, and a new Sandbox level editor that will be workable for all major platforms, both current and upcoming.

especially after the Unreal Engine was such a FIASCO this gen!

I'm guessing it's not much of an improvement over CryEngine 2, although Crytek seems very able so it's not entirely impossible either. Oh, this is almost unbeliavably quicky considering they already had an excellent multi-platform engine (no released games doesn't equal not working).

Unreal Engine a fiasco? How are you looking at it? I'm guessing it was, is and will be a huge financial success. However, personally (and apparently I'm not the only one) I hate the way games made on it look like.

So basically its the cryengine 2, but optimized a bit better and only for consoles? Can you say Crysis on ps3?

So basically this will be a step back in sheer power....
Another reason to hate HD consoles goes on my list.

I wouldnt say step back as the PC version of the engine will probably perform like the CryENGINE 2 but have a bit nicer hardware requirements.

Does it always have to be Crysis on consoles?

Can't they create the new engine and have Free Radical do a lot of work on the actual game stuff?

Yeah, when it should look better than Cryengine 2. Basically the technology is stagnating and not going forward, because the consoles just cant handle it.
