why do you take such offense to the data? Do you know for a fact how many people play online with their PS3s? Or are you just cheesed that the numbers aren't what you'd like them to be? Honestly...

wtf are you talking about. im making sense of the data

Or at least trying to.  The data is presented in a misleading fashion and as such I think most people have misinterpreted it.

The data is presumably compiled from NA, where (in terms of sales) Wii>360>PS3 and you would actually expect to see the wii with a higher online representation, based on sales.  It doesn't tell you anything about what percentage of the 5,000 owned each console, or really anything relavant at all, other than that more people played games online this year than last.

Thats really one of the greatest things about statistics: you can manipulate data to show what you want it to show.  Its up to us to weed through the BS.

yes trying to. it would help alot if they gave us a percentage of each console in the 20000 polled. thats why i took the market share. i dont have a better way. but it statistically easier for the wii to be in the poll because of how many owners there are. one thing that would effect the poll is how they found the pool. if they went to a mall and asked passer byers the market share would be a reasonable way to find the splits. if they went online the hd consoles might have more people

Yea, its very poorly constructed data. As I said before, it really only tells us that more people are playing games online than last year.  Probably due to the fact that all this gen's consoles are capable of it.  Whereas last gens most popular console had limited online capability.

It also seems the 19% last year and 25% this year is growth, not total percentage of people who game online.  The article on gamespot has that as 57%.  Or at least I assume that is correct as the Gamespot article's update seemed to be in regards to those numbers.

Not quite.  Statistics can be misleading.  Here we go:

"We start with the pool that play games (61 percent of population ages 2 and over)," NPD analyst Anita Frazier explained to GameSpot."

Read: Of the total population of (I'm assuming) N.A. over the age of 2, 61% play some form of electronic gaming device.

Edit:  And if they polled 20,000 people and 5,000 played games online, then it does mean that the % rose from 19% to 25% of the general population.

"Of those, 57 percent play online."

Read: So thats actually 57% of the 61% who play games.  Or roughly 35% of the general population.

Which means: That out of EVERYONE who plays an electronic gaming device, 43% DON'T play online.  This includes the PC as well.

take that!!!

It would appear as though we've already come across a contradiction in the data.

"We start with the pool that play games (61 percent of population ages 2 and over)," NPD analyst Anita Frazier explained to GameSpot. "Of those, 57 percent play online."

This works out to about 35% of the general population playing a gaming device online.

From their poll they only got 25%.  This would suggest that either their first statistic is wrong, ie: its actually less than 57% of gamers play online, or their sample size was indeed too small.

Shouldn't this read "50% of 360 gamers play online. Greater than Wii & PS3 online."?

Anyway isn't enough to me to prove that these are correct throughout the U.S. let alone the world. Believe it or not some cities in the U.S. can be a city of fanboys where the Wii/360/PS3 can be more popular. Were these people chosen at random around the U.S.?

Either way impressive all around good and numbers for PS3 and Wii will get bigger as install base gets larger. Pretty good for new online services (PS3 & Wii). Now all we need is sales of PSN to be able to identify the stressfulness of their service.

FootballFan - "GT has never been bigger than Halo. Now do a comparison between the two attach ratios and watch GT get stomped by Halo. Reach will sell 5 million more than GT5. Quote me on it."

It doesn't even say that.  See my previous posts.  This data is poorly constructed and misleading.

Was the 5000 number ever actually stated by the NPD though?  Or was that just assumed based on the 25% figure.

I realize that the 57% is just out of the gaming subset of the population.

After looking around a little more, it seems few sources totally understood the numbers.  Some say half of the 20,000 play online on the 360.  Some agree with Gamespot, others with Arstechnica, etc.

Anyways, it seems to be....

61% of the population 2 years and older play games.
57% of those gamers play online
2008 saw a 19% increase over 2007
2009 has seen a 25% increase over 2008
Out of the 57% of gamers who play games online...
87% play on PC
50% play on 360
29% play on Wii
20% play on PS3
