It would appear as though we've already come across a contradiction in the data. 

"We start with the pool that play games (61 percent of population ages 2 and over)," NPD analyst Anita Frazier explained to GameSpot. "Of those, 57 percent play online." 

This works out to about 35% of the general population playing a gaming device online.

From their poll they only got 25%.  This would suggest that either their first statistic is wrong, ie: its actually less than 57% of gamers play online, or their sample size was indeed too small.
