Forums - Gaming - Was 1998 the best year of gaming the world has seen?

Half Life came out that year.

So yes, yes it is.

I think FF8 was 1999.

Don't forget games like: Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines, Grim Fandango, Banjo Kazooie, Delta Force, 1080 snowboarding, MediEvil, Myth, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, Radiant Silvergun, Soul Caliber in the Arcades, Star Ocean the second Story, Star Wars Rogue Squadron, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Thief and Unreal....

best year ever... Voodoo2 ftw!!

1998 was the height of the PC golden age. hl1 hit that year among other games.

1991 for me.

It was really good, no doubt.
Best year for me was 1995, the year of Chrono Trigger. All those games you mentioned don't have shit on the great CT.
I remember there was a thread about which decade was the best for gaming. The 90's won by a long shot. 80's probably came second.

Quem disse que a boca é tua?

Qual é, Dadinho...?

Dadinho é o caralho! Meu nome agora é Zé Pequeno!

Whenever the first Civilization was released. Flat out, the original Civ was never topped for me. More games have refined the idea, and executed better, but as far as a jump where I go: "I found the best game EVER", nothing matched it. The original Civ had me imagining there was FAR more to it than any other games have done. Oh, I got addicted to game stuff, but never the seeing far more in there.

MAYBE if someone were to an update of Emperor of the Fading Suns, with a better interface and so on, that might do it. But I don't see it happening personally.  More on EFS:

Middle Ages meet spaces, with conquest AND politics.

2001 was pretty good.

Gran Turismo 3, ICO, Final Fantasy X, Devil May Cry, GTAIII, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3, MGS2, Halo: CE, SSBM, Jak & Daxter, Pikmin, and more!

1991 was the year of

Civilization
Monkey Island 2: Le Chuck's Revenge
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (which I played more than 15 years later)
Final Fantasy IV (which I'll play 18 years later on DS)
Lemmings

I didn't play videogames yet in 1991, and if I recall correctly, I bought 4 of my all-time favorites in 1992:
Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2, Civilization and the brand new Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.
It can't get better than this for me.

Other legendary games from 1991 (which I never played):
Sonic the Hedgehog
Super Mario World (western release)
Street Fighter II

Also from 1991: F-Zero, Another World, Actraiser, Leisure Suit Larry and Space Quest VGA remakes...

It seems 1998 was also a golden year with all the titles already mentioned by others. Too bad I had slowly lost interest in PC games and I hadn't discovered consoles yet. Grim Fandango was my 1998 highlight.

The "golden age" is always 15 years ago. Right now it's all about '94.

So, sorry folks... you'll have to wait until 2013.
