What we can give to Sony is that the effect of these big relases will give it some breath to be less hard pressed while deciding a possible price cut. But if and when PS3 should start becoming REALLY big, we would see bigger numbers than now. So, Sony isn't doomed, but it doesn't rule too. And anyhow it doesn't have any chance to fill the gap with Wii until HD TV's will be in the majority of households, HD consoles partially rely on graphics, SD TV's nullify one of their strong points. But by then PS4, XB720 and Wii2 will be already released and PS3, XB360 and Wii, if still on sale, will be entry level consoles, winning then would be economically good, but it would have a small image return.

I think the guy is on the right track sort of.

In my opinion Sony know now is their best time for the console to claw back the numbers the 360 has over it. It has set up everything for now and this year. It is the last chance salloon for the PS3 to fight back. The first quarter/half of 2009 for the 360 has no exclusive big hitters coming, we know games are what sell game systems. The PS3 has a very big number of exclusives in the same period what with Yak3,KZ2,Infamous etc. Add to that multi-platform games such as Resident Evil 5 etc = a very good period for the PS3.

However what we don't know is the 360 line-up for the rest of the year. At GDC and at E3 we will find out what Microsoft have up their sleeve if they have anything at all. MS have always been a company deep in secret with their products especially games. With the simple announcements of Dead Rising 2 and Lost Planet 2, Mass Effect 2 i wonder why they were announced like that. Maybe it is because like when Gears 2 was announced there was bigger announcements to come so they wanted their own day of limelight rather then be on the same stage as xyz. So my sneaky feeling is in the next few weeks and months we will start to see agressive movement from MS with their announcements on games. With the financial results of the year it is clear in terms of buying power MS has a lot of excess $$$ to buy up titles while Sony can't.

This then in my view sets up a repeat of last year. PS3 will get to September in front having had a price cut and the games to go with that. The PS3 will be doing very well. But then for Sony it all depends on if they can get God of War 3, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy, Drakes 2 etc out. If they can get these games out to match what the 360 has for holidays 2009 then Sony will have a very good 09 in my book.

But if those games get delayed and it has a light holiday line up and repeats sales of 08 then that will be it for the PS3. We saw what MS can do sales wise if it chooses to drop price and they have made enough money to drop further if they want too.
GDC kicks off 2 weeks tomorrow, last year we had games like Fable 2 announced. A game that sold nearly 3m units in just over 3 months. Gears 2 was announced at GDC last year too, a game that sold nearly 5m units in just over 3 months. Point being were about to enter what analysts know as the MS zone, a time when they come clean about the games/products they have coming this year. Unlike Sony MS will not announce games years away, that is not the way they do things, they didn't become one of the biggest companies in the world by giving away their secrets.

So what happens in this period really will define the year in terms of sales. If MS come out with nothing other then a few more ex exclusives going Multi-platform then that won't change much. They need exclusives and i would be very shocked if they don't get them. I would not be surprised one bit to see the next Grand Theft Auto game go exclusive on 360, nor would i be surprised to see Modern Warfare 2 go exclusive etc, MS have the money to make that happen. And if they don't do something like that then i seriously wonder what direction the console will go.

PS3 will have a good year if all the games don't suffer delays and meet expectations. If MS comes out with nothing then it will be a very good holiday for PS3. But if MS comes out guns blazing then it will be the 4th year in 2nd place for 360.

I remember an article like this when MGS4 was released, but I couldn't find it anymore.

Thats because Sony is once again in the same position it was last year (except with an 8 million console gap this time) vs MS. MGS4 was the game that boosted console sales around this time. Sony started off extremely weak without bundling KZ2, so it looks like they aren't learning from what they did right last year.

Who said x360 has no good exclusive this year? Halo Wars, Star Ocean 4, The Lost and Damned say Hi.

Star OCean was a great success for X360 in Japan. They will never win Japan but it is still doing better than expected.

Halo Wars will go neck and neck with Killzone 2 in terms of sales WW,

And The Lost and Damned already the best selling DLC and generate alot of new sales for GTA4.

Seriously, the most Sony can drop is down to $299.99 and by that time Microsoft will have revealed their Q4 big guns at E3 and with a $150.00 Arcade unit and a $250.00 Pro system, How can Sony ever going to win the war when in customer minds and economy time like this, budget and value is important.

Don't forget Big games like COD MW2, Guitar Hero 5, Madden 2010, Bioshock 2, and 99.9% of all third party games will be availble for both consoles and Third party games sell, play, and look better on a cheaper console and some x360 games even has exclusive DLCs. In simple economic, xbox will more than likely increase their lead over PS3. A few exclusives like Uncharted 2 or a GOW3 will not be enough...just look at LBP and KZ2.

The truth is $150>>>$300 no matter how many bells and whistles the PS3 has.

star ocean 4 wasn't a great succes in Japan for either the 360 or square. it did put the 360 ahead of its closest competitor there by 5 thousand units and it did sell 179,000 copies its first week. however the very next week, the 360 finished third again and star ocean 4 only managed to sell 20,000 units so star ocean 4 is nowhere at all on pace with the ps3's biggest rpg of the year in that territory white knight chronicles. now let's look at yakuza 3's first week on ps3. it put the ps3 ahead of both of its competiors combined and made it sell 10 thousand more units than the 360 was able to do the preveious week with an exclusive rpg from square. it also sold much better than the wii has been able to do the last several weeks and even put the ps3 very close to the numbers that the handhelds achieved there last week. i wonder how it feels to be square. knowing that SO4 is going to be limping along towards 250k and that the game will be very lucky to ever reac 300k when it would have been 2x on ps3.

Star Ocean 4 would've been a success in Japan if it was exclusive to the PS3. Mark my words 500 k copies sold first day. This is truth.
