Forums - Gaming - Wii Sports Resort to beat Halo 3?

Nope not a chance, don't think Nintendo will have 4 million copies ready first day.

Halo 3 is like a elephant - huge the first 4 legs(weeks)

Wii Sports will be like a centipede - small but long legs(weeks)

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

Not only will it not beat Halo 3 1st week sales, Nintendo won't even ship 3 million copies for 1st week. Remember, Nintendo still cannot even make Mario Kart discs fast enough to keep up with demand.

Oh, yes though. WSR is far more important to gaming then H3 and will sell more, overall.

Because cute fun casual titles are important, and big budget titles with gobs of features that keep people playing 2 years after launch are just fluff?

Yes actually. People will still be playing Wii Sports (and presumably resort) for much longer than two years. I'm amazed people still don't get that.

Not regularly. Wii Sports is a cool game, no question. But I, just like most people, got tired of it fairly quickly. It's moved so many copies due to being bundled with every single Wii ever sold. Halo 3 Sold 9m+ copies unbundled, and it probably sees more play on a daily basis than the 4x as many Wii Sports copies floating around out there.

You are very wrong here

The average amount ot time spent on Wii sports per user is very high... about 33-35 hours, this may not seem much to people like us (I have clocked over 110 hours on it) but you have to remember most of the owners of Halo 3 are also casual (in terms of time spent)

Halo 3 likely has a much much higher amount of time per user than Wii sports, probably one of the highest of this generation console games, but at best it will still be well under 100 hours per person.... probably around 70-80 hours.

Thus the sheer number of Wii Sports owners means it will get played a lot more, the hours are probably more spread out too, Halo 3 will have had staggering amounts of time spent on it in the weeks (and months) after launch, but it's low weekly sales now limit the possible hours compared to all the new Wii Sports owners.

A number of owners getting tired of the game doesn't stop the huge numbers of new owners playing it, in addition to those who bring it out once in a while. (Even if they are a small percentage)

Oddly enough I played Wii Sports for the first time in 11 months just 2 days ago.

I don't think it will. Maybe 1.25-1.5 million on its first week but it will easily beat any games on PS360 on the long run.

Wii Sports: Now this should put all the numbers here in perspective. This game is a beast, played by data-sharing Channel users for 24,740,000 hours over the course of 21,100,000 sessions. These people, per person, have spent a ludicrous 33 hours and six minutes with this game. That's a lot of bowling and tennis. Each system that the game's been played on has hosted an average 28.3 times. Using my master's degree, I can deduce that this means that people buy a Wii, insert Wii Sports and then play it again and again and again.

BTW That is as of Jun 23 2008 it has likely gone up since then.

It's not the same man.  People might pull out the wii and blow the dust off when they are having a party or something, but people that play halo play it on a very regular basis (i.e. at least once a week).  I would say the majority, not all mind, but the majority of people that buy this game will play it pretty regularly the first month, and then hardly touch it.  I think you are overthinking the casual mentality.  They are called casual players for a reason.

They are called casual players so that there's an "us" and a "them". If you hadn't noticed alot of people don't like the term 'casual' players, that's why their are so many threads mocking it's use.

Mock if you will, I really don't care.  It doesn't change the fact that certain people (casual players) have different game playing habits as others.  Giving them an identifying title as in casual is hardly something I would mock.  I mean, the freaking game companies use these terms to categorize us!  why can't we use them?  because we play the games or are smarter or more sophisticated?  No. the mocking of the use of that term is probably some form of fanboyism.

Nintendo executives avoid using the term (although you'll find it used on the lower rungs), and although they on occassion use it, they have said they don't like the term. The companies that divide demographics into "hardcore" and "casual" are actually the ones that are finding it tougher to get a foot in the "casual" business. Ubisoft and EA's "casual" software has been moderately successful, but it pales in comparison to Nintendo's games, which are simply made to be fun for most people.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

The Nintendo Channel.

The bit of info redspear posted above me is for the US channel as of last July, but there has been a more recent one for the US, and I collect data for 8 of the PAL regions channels regularly... but generally the average hours per user remains similar.... and depending on which region you look at is between 29 and 37 hours (though I can't speak for Japan)

I actually extrapolated this to try include all Wii owners, Wii Sports has been played easily in excess of 1 billion hours worldwide. (the average time on the Nintendo channel multiplied by the number of Wii Sports copies is around 1.5 billion, but the Nintendo channel may not be accurately representative of non-channel users, but we can be pretty sure the average isn't halved)

1st week? I doubt it

Of course it will

MY ZELDA COLLECTION

Not a chance, Nintendo will never ship that many copies.

My prediction: First week sales of 200-400,000 units, followed by an influx of "WSR Epic Fail" and "Wii is dead" threads for about 2 weeks. Then, some months after we will have the "WSR passed Halo3" and "WSR passed WiiPlay" threads.

And so the circle of life will continue.
