Forums - Gaming - Turn-based RPG or Action RPG

In regards to JRPGs, I generally prefer turn based. Most action RPGs from that camp tend to have really bad action gameplay, bringing the whole game down (weak combat, not enough interaction with the environment, etc.).  Turn based games, while a bit outdated, at least do what they do well (in some cases, like Pokemon and FFX).

Hopefully Demon's Souls will change that.

As for WRPGs, I can't really comment.  The only one I ever played for a serious lenghth of time was Neverwinter Nights like six years ago.

Action. Much much better.

A major reason I play RPGs is for gameplay, so I do look for that aspect. But I don't quarrel over if its turn based or action based. I like games in both times.

However, I feel that there hasn't been an action RPG which has perfected the system yet. I suppose because they're still limiting theur gameplay in part to an 'RPG' feel. It takes a real deviation like Symphony of the Night or Odin Sphere to get to the point where I think Action 'RPGs' get the job done right. Diablo II is about the best I have seen, but that became its own genre entirely.

However, one series has clearly perfected turn based RPGs, and that's Dragon Quest.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

i prefer turn based

I love them both, but turn based rapes action RPGs. I'm not saying ALL ARPGs are button mashing, but it's not often you find one that it's not and that's just untill you grinded enough.

Quem disse que a boca é tua?

Qual é, Dadinho...?

Dadinho é o caralho! Meu nome agora é Zé Pequeno!

It really depends on the game. I like both!

Yes! Dragon Quest series are the best!

PS3 rocks!!!

If they are properly done, both. If they are not well done, they will bore me to death.

funny, I always thought that Action RPG meant games like Diablo and others that have some sort of "RPG backend" but plays like "normal action" games. now, it makes sense saying that Tales games are "action RPGs", but having an overworld/dungeon and a battle screen doesn't look like "real action" to me.

I like both too...

the words above were backed by NUCLEAR WEAPONS!

When reflexes are taken into account and buttons are mapped for defense, attack, spells, etc... it´s considered action. Technically, it´s possible to have action AND turn-based, i.e. you control one character each turn and have various buttons mapped for attack, defence, spells, etc... like Eternal Sonata. The opposite of turn-based is actually real-time, not action like many people think. The opposite of action is actually command-based.

So in the end developers have the following main choices:

turn-based x command-based

turn-based x action

real-time x command-based

real-time x action

Overworld, battle screens are mere design choices that encompass the gameplay, not the core of the gameplay though.
