Well, IMO, action RPGs are mostly adventure games. I'd go with turn based by my own definition of what an RPG should be.

I agree with kylohk. "Action RPGs" are really just adventure games. An RPG is turn based by the traditional understanding of the term. This means that monsters do not attack you when you are deciding what to do! Twitch-based games that have inventory screens, character stats, leveling, etc. are adventure games.
