Forums - Sales - PS3 exclusive sales... whats the deal?

First of all

add in GT5:P

the demo of GT 5 which sold bout 3 million

SECONDLY

the PS userbase....has always been DIVERSIFIED.....it has been split over different genre's

this time the userbase is lower.....so this diversification is bad.....but back in the day whent he Userbase was HUGE for the PS consoles.....diversification was VERY GOOD as every type of game sold brilliant numbers

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

LBP a new ip that only sold half a million less than fable -established one-
MGS4 outsold mgs3 if I can remember correctly with the ps3 having smaller install base

X360 is an American centred console.... and apart from JRPGs like Final Fantasy etc, Americans have the most 1st week heavy buying habits.

As for total sales, that is mostly a userbase issue, remember the lead the PS3 has in Japan doesn't mean much for the list of games you mentioned, so the sales gap is even larger.

Cause Sony can't do marketing.......

Sony do not spend enough on sales and marketing their exclusive games.

I think PS3 was originally seen as the platform for the next installments of series such as Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy. Just like 360 was seen as the console for the next Halo.

And although PS3 fanboys on internet forums will try to make you believe otherwise - people didnt buy PS3 for Killzones, Resistances, Little Big Planet etc. They've bought it for FF, GT and MGS. Sales prove my point. It's just that 360 has already got its Halo and co, while PS3 is still waiting for its Gran Turismo and Final Fantasy.

Well, userbase definitely has a hand in it, but how much influence it has, I've got no clue.

But I think darth is right when he says the userbase is more diverse. After all, the 360 is generally a more favorable console for people who play a lot of multiplayer games, and a lot of the multiplayer games out there are shooters. This could explain the huge numbers for the Halo/Gears games compared to the shooters on the PS3.

Buying habits are of course a part of it too, and since there is a proven difference in mean age on each of the consoles (http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/news/wii-attracting-young-boys-older-women-in-droves-ndash-nielsen-/?biz=1), where the PS3 has the oldest userbase (in the US at least). This is bound to have an effect on buying habits.

I say that it's simply the lack of MAINSTREAM hype (and no, I'm not saying mainstream with contempt, like some college professor or indie musician).

Sure LBP had a lot of hype, but aside from the UK who saw LBP on CNN, Soda Cans, or TV (I only saw the very short, vague, and stupid commercial with the kid looking at reflections outside of a window).

Here in the US, on the East Coast, I saw E-Trade commercials with a "hip" young investor saying he bought a bunch of tv screens to keep track of stocks... and own his friends on Gears of War.

We saw with the infamous thread about which game had more hype (KZ2 vs. Halo 3) that Halo 3 obviously had more hype, both on the internet and off.

All of those games, with the exception of Fable 2, are considered part of mainstream American pop culture. They're a "must get" as Call of Duty is.

Look at GTA 4, controversy and news coverage only helps that game sell, rather than hinder.

The fact is that aside from hard core fans, nobody knows about Killzone 2.
=================
I want all PS3 owners to do this. Go to someone you know who owns a PS3, but you don't consider "hard core". Ask them what games they have. Most likely they will have Call of Duty, GTA IV, +sports games.

So does that mean PS3 owners are simply casual gamers? No, as they have bought "hard core" titles such as CoD and GTA. The only differences between COD and GTA vs KZ2 and Resistance 2 being that one side is known by fucking parents, who will buy the games for their kids, and the other being raved and ripped apart by fan boys.

We hardcore gamers are the minority, and Sony needs to realize that. They need to really shape up their marketing. While it was encouraging to see the KZ2 tv ad (which I didn't see on tv...), that alone won't help.

They need to go beyond the hard core fans, and if they truly want to move hardware sales, beyond the user base, and make people look at the PS3 and its game.

What would you rather have?

Sony spends alot more on marketing, thus not having enough money left over to fund exclusive games or spend low amounts and have more money to fund exclusives?

This is probably why MS does not have a lot of in-house exclusive games because they use that money for advertising.

And my personal thoughts are that PS3 owners are too nitpicky. 360 owners would be happy with KZ 2 and would be calling it the best thing ever. On the other hand PS3 owners are going like not worth 60 dollars, controller lag, boring missions, etc.

Blu-Ray player effect worth a mention???

Perhaps for the older titles. But that shouldn't really be an excuse of later titles (being since last October/November), and since then the only games worth mentioning are LBP and R2. One of which is niche and the other one suffered huge competition.
