Forums - Gaming - I figured out why 3rd parties hesitate to put their best teams on Wii games

And that's why the only way Nintendo could get those 3rd parties on Wii - deprive them of choice. First, dominate the market, then castrate all 3rd parties, finally, force them to make games for Wii. This should work =)

If developers merely wanted to "show off" new technology and/or technique, they would've stuck with the PC, not some ~3 year old console technology (yes, I mean the HD consoles).

And you're delineating yourself: "new gen" and "next gen". I thought people were already tired of the "hardcore" and "casual" dichotomy? Why introduce another?

So basically, your advice for 3rd parties is to follow the biggest install base out there completely ignoring the actual differenses between PS360 and Wii gamers.

Bullshit. And it's funny how you contradict yourself in your own post: you say that Wii is the "new gen" while PS360 is just the "next gen" yet you complain about the lack of traditional core games on the Wii. How so? If Wii is the "new gen" (and it probably is) then the games for it should be different and made suited for its audience.

To make PS360-like games for the Wii would be a major mistake from the publishers side and so far I dont see any game that proved otherwise.

no because they want it to come out on the system that will sell more copies...

From a business standpoint, that doesn't matter. The reason why these games sell so much on PS360 is that the 3rd party publishers are jumping through some insane hoops to get advertising, hype, and lots of intensity into the games themselves. Sales are up, revenue is way up, but profits? No.

There are certainly many who profit on the HD consoles, but these are largely the companies that stick to formulas, like Activision-Blizzard. Even EA, the king of formulaic development, had some bad losses last year, as did Take-Two. Ubisoft i think was in the black, but that's because they already have a fairly substantial share in Wii development (which is slowly becoming a share of good Wii development, and not just their Petz/imagine junk). SEGA was in the red, but that was due to a lot of screw-ups on the HD side of the line (though i could be wrong on that)

Basically at this juncture: PS360 = revenue, Wii = profit, and in this economy, the latter speaks far louder than the former, whereas previously when credit was easier to acquire, it was a harder decision to make.

A lot of games are multiplatform between PC/360/PS3, so it's not like the typical PC developers have left the PC side. Plus, there's even more prestige and GotY awards you can get when you can show off on three systems at the same time.

"Next gen" and "new gen" are clearly defined in the original post and don't leave for interpretation, but I could just replace them with HD and Wii if requested by more users. The terms were inspired by Reggie's speak at E3: "If you came here to see what's "next", you are in the wrong place. Instead we are going to show what's absolutely "new"." Something along those lines.

Reggie represents Nintendo. His "new gen" rhetoric is no different from "blast processing". If such terms would only contribute to the further rift among VGChartz members, it's best not to use it.

Please don't be unfair to developers (the programmers, artists etc. that are part of the dev chain). They design and make games they love, and games are not something that they can churn out in a month. Its not that they just look for money: if they did, then all games would be only for the Wii (and DS for the handhelds). You make it sound that they are "artsy" and "snubbish". I feel bad when developers are "forced" to do something for a particular platform (HD or otherwise) by their publisher.

i don't believe it, only a couple elite creators that have tons of control over development can say they just worry about art and not money. I think most companies still haven't figured out the wii yet. There's a few that are getting it, but many are not.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

Malstrom? Partially correct though.

I'm Unamerica and you can too.

The Official Huge Monster Hunter Thread:

The Hunt Begins 4/20/2010 =D

Another well written post, and I agree 100%, half assed efforts equal half assed results much of the time. I see as the financial market continues to crumble, Wii will look very advantageous to developers starving to make money.

I also don't understand why some people harp on things that don't really get at the heart of what you were stating. "New" gen and "next" gen are just terms you used to create a distinction, nothing more. (at least that's how I looked at it)

Prestige is a good way to put it. During the NES' rise you had the same attitude circulating around the gaming community as well, fad, weak, not for real gamers, it was all said before, then the crash happened and those companies that once shunned Nintendo ended up NEEDING Nintendo, we'll see what happens this time.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

I was thinking the same, lol

I agree with the OP, but then we see things like Deadly Creatures bombing, and it becomes pretty clear why third parties hesitate to put some effort. (The game may have legs though)
