Forums - Gaming - I figured out why 3rd parties hesitate to put their best teams on Wii games

Hmm, I don't know what to think. It's Rol, so I expected a joke thread. But since I don't see a Kim Possible avatar, I guess I can trust the opening post, and take it as a real topic.

I think that you stated you're piece quite eloquently Rol, and I happen to agree with you.

I just figured, you know, that either:

A. When they try, they fail miserably (ie look at the sales of Zack and Wiki, No More Heroes, etc)

or

B. Why put effort into making the "best games" when you can spend like $5, put it on the Wii, and make millions in return?

It doesn't make sense to use No More Heroes as an example.

They were happy with NMH western sales.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

yes, I understood the intention of your post, but how are these nintendo teams the "developer equivalent of a 5 year old beating you in a sport/game" ?

This. Obviously going too far in any direction is harmful. To be a slave to the dictates of the masses would be just as bad for gaming as it is for the developers to dictate to the masses, and you see bad things come of it on both sides, this elitist developer mentality that keeps them stuck on the PS360, and the loads and loads of shovelware seen on the Wii/DS. A happy medium comes from the effort to package your vision for the consumer, and not just for yourselves, and not let the consumer ruin your vision either

This problem only arises because of something too many people don't understand about business: consumers often don't know what they want until it's made and available to them. Lots of developers ask their customers what they're looking for in a product, but this is not useful research! What you want to do is look at what people DO, not what they say. You learn alot more from that than asking people what they want.

That's more or less what i meant. The Wii is a good example of such, nobody knew they wanted it, but it was clearly made with the consumer in mind.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Tell me why making games that the developers want to make with the best graphics and technology available is a bad thing instead of making games that they don't want to make on worse technology just so they can make them more cheaply? That's what a publisher wants to do.

Maybe you should look at the soul-less development companies that churn out crap like the Imagine series that are clearly entirely based on profit rather than any artistic value and pride the developers can get out of their work.

Look at Killzone 2 and imagine the incredible amount of pride and satisfaction Guerilla gets from people saying how amazing it looks. Then imagine the pride that people who work on the Wii receive: it looks good, for a Wii game (read: bad on any other current console).

Note: making more money is not a given anyway seeing as half of the so-called hardcore projects on the Wii have bombed.

it is how they feel. So they think they are all that, and nintendo are the 5 year olds. But they get beat anyways.

my post feels extra lame now that I've had to explain it

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

I see a few posters already gave me many case in points. What major third party game bombed on Wii?

Hell remember when everyone was calling W@W a bomb on Wii? now its damn near platinum, and that was a gimped port.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

Poor 3rd party devs that actually worked on the Wii: you're all lazy, talentless, second stringers who don't deserve to work on the Wii. Never mind that you've never encountered a beast like the Wii in the past.

'Chu talking 'bout, Willis? Of course they've encountered a system just like the Wii before; it's called the Gamecube, remember?

Oh wait, we're talking about third-parties, huh?

Never mind, they've never encountered anything like the Wii before.

I honestly have no idea what your post is trying to say.

Sure they have, the Wii is just two gamecubes duct taped together.
