not trying to induce panic ..but im having the same problem as yesterday. got disconnected from my current match with the error - 943 and now i can no longer logg in due to error 1003

Free service ...

I agree, PSN is free so we have to tolerate this.

Now this really pisses me off, I pay $50 for this?

"As many chainsaw duelists likely already know, Xbox Live performance hasn't been exemplary over the past 24 hours. Players are reporting frequent disconnection from Microsoft's soon-to-be-updated online service, prompting the ever-watchful Xbox Live Director of Programming, Major Nelson, to issue a statement which discloses that engineers are working to "determine the root cause of this issue."

We imagine the "root cause" has something to do with the bajillion people who are simultaneously trying to play Gears of War 2 --"

sonys servers always sucked so i would say no. they were down even when socom confrontation was released same was with LBP.

Gears2 and halo 3 say HI.  I guess M$'s servers suck too.

No, it is pear-to-pear system. I have spotted peak level of Halo 3 up to 500.000 k reachable players simultaneously and never had any problem because the game automaticaly recalibrate to the best pear connection. So you can't get disconnected from online games with that system (don't know if it was always the case).

IMO the XBL infrastructure/maintenance is way superior (that is why we are paying btw ).

But we won't bring that debat here, it is not the right place.

@dbot, absolutly true for Gear 2 but the game sold 2.1 millions the first day so ... I don't know if it was avoidable. The matchmaker routine was not perfect either but this is not related to XBL infrastructure.

KZ2 is already the most successful pre-ordered game on PS3, so they will have a couple of problem at the beginning...

Evan Wells (Uncharted 2): I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3.

the servers are currently down, the error code is 931 on the forums they said that the servers should be up in a hour or so. They are currently testing these internally now

I think this issue is caused more by the games' net code than any "infrastructure" that you perceive you are paying for with xbox live.  That is why all major games usually release a day 1 patch to resolve issues with connections.  Some games like Gears/Halo/Socom need to issue additional patches.  It is not possible for a public beta to accurately simulate the load these server will be placed under upon the game's release.

I don't think it is fair to say it is a problem with the free service, when my paid service has the exact same issues.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Wow, must mean big sale #s. Some of PS3's best games had these issues: LBP, MGS4. Poor Resistance 2, I don't recall it having these issuses, which could equate to it not selling like MGS4, LBP nor KZ2.

How would you explain SOCOM, which had huge online problems, and also sold a relitavely small amount?

Any WoW fans out there remember how bad their servers were for 1-2 months after release? This happens to everyone. The companies always lowball their server deployments at launch then ramp up their services to match sales. This way they don't waste any money by "over-supporting" their infrastructure.

halo 3 had major problems at launch just like Gears 2.  Peer to peer is not nearly as good as dedicated servers.  And yes you can get disconnected in Peer to Peer (ever play CoD4 or W@W), in fact it is much more likely than a dedicated server.

Yes, in peer to peer the host can migrate, however this does not mean you wont' get disconnected. Again, every play W@W?

@ Izaaz

Socom: Confrontation was an online only game, and not developed by Zipper Interactive, that could have a lot to do with it. KZ2 is a full game with far more marketing, not as complex as Socom, and not releasing during a holiday with LOADS of competition. Surely, those factors also worked against Socom, no?

I'm not talking only about sales. I was referring more to this:

"Wow, must mean big sale #s. Some of PS3's best games had these issues..."

You stated that having these issues must mean that it had big sales. Since SOCOM had these issues, with a low amount of sales, it's quite possible to have online issues without having a large amount of sales. I'm not saying that KZ2 has low sales......just that it's possible that the sales aren't huge. Are the sales huge.....probably, since there was the large number of pre-orders as stated in the news on the front page. But I'm just throwing out another possibility.......which is that Sony has some ongoing issues with their servers around launches of games which feature online.

And as for competition......the only 3 titles I could think as being competition is R2, GeoW2 and CoD5. However, those were released 2 weeks (R2), 3 weeks (GeoW2) and 4 weeks (COD5) later, so SOCOM had enough of a headstart on the other games. In fact, you would think that these 3 games would have cannibilized each other's sales, since they were released in consecutive weeks.......but, if I remember correctly, all 3 games are outpacing their predecessors, which shows that competition doesn't have big of an affect as most people think.

I don't even know why I went and wrote this last paragraph.......since it was irrelevant to my main point, which is the parapgraph that precedes it.
