About Gamespot's 8.5 review:

Their problems with the game included they thought it was 'too easy' because of the controls. Ummm, why, because dual analog sucks? Because it's hell to aim with a thumbstick? Would they rather struggle through the game with a 1/2 inch joystick?? Do crappy controls (aka 'harder') make shooters more fun? Do these idiots rate PC shooters as 'too easy' because aiming with the mouse is like point and click??

They also said that it 'Doesn't do much different than the previous two'. Uhhhh... it's a sequel. Duh. It's not gonna reinvent the freakin wheel. And what about the control system that is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT??

I don't think the review is fair at all. Gamespot is a reviewer that has been pretty biased against Nintendo platforms for a while. I guess their crap won't stop now :(. Oh well, I'll just stick with IGN like I always have, they are pretty fair across the board.

The newness thing dogs all sequels, and to some degree deservedly. I remember the unadulterated joy I had in Goldeneye over little things like the body-part specific hit animations and the sniper rifle. Also was the first FPS I played where stealth was often more important than just shooting things. The newness of these experiences greatly elevated my enjoyment of the game. However, all these have now become defacto standards in every FPS, and the effect is considerably muted.

As for "too easy for the controls", I think they could have phrased it better. I think they would havepreferred the game to be more difficult in order to keep up with the "easier" controls - ie faster enemies or more enemies, or need for more precise aiming)

I agree that Gamepro's review had more stuff to criticize to justify its 8.5 score.

Doesn't mean the criticism is justified, though.

The newness does NOT hurt reviews for all sequels. At least not on Gamespot.  I already listed: Ratchet and Clank games don't seem to be affected by the fact that nothing changes between them.  Nor does Halo 2, Call of Duty 2 and 3, Metal Gear Solid 3 and Subsistence, Madden 08, GTA3 and it's various nearly identical reproductions,  Dead or Alive 4, Guitar Hero 2, Half-Life 2, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, oh and about 100 other games that are identical or nearly identical to their predecessors yet scored higher than them, and higher Metroid Prime 3.  Are you seriously going to try and tell me that ANY of those games changed more than was changed in Metroid Prime 3?

As far as the difficulty, they obviously didn't play it on the advanced difficulty setting that you unlock after beating the game.  Everyone who did played it says it was very challenging.  IGN hasn't even been able to beat it yet.

Well, the only one of those games I played was Half Life 2, and yeah that WAS different enough (as different as a 1P FPS could be) from the original that it doesn't deserve any knocks in that regard.

I've played everything on that list, including Half-Life 2.  I can tell you that from the video reviews and everything I have seen and heard about the game much less changed between them than has changed in MP3.  I include Half-Life 2 in that statement.  I don't think any games should be counted off for familiarty (or at least not much at all) as long as they aren't repeating the same mistakes.

Even with its great new controls, decent story and amazing visuals, there are some annoyances that have bled through from the other games...The biggest offender is the way the game streams new levels.

ITS ALMOST HERE!!!!!!!!! I'm buying it first thing after work tomorrow. I'm by the time I get home and play it for awhile one of you will have already started a thread about it and I will add my 2 cents then.

Gamespot just called me...said mine would be in in the afternoon...which is fine since I don't get off til 3. After that I may cease to be a VGchartz memeber for a couple weeks. :oD

No I hadn't seen that. Thanks. I added it to the first post. It's current average is a 9.1 for anyone too lazy to check the front page. Interestingly, this once again contradicts pretty much everything Gamespot and Game Pro complained about.

Some key points supporting their experience being more in line with the norm and points of theirs that once again contradict Gamespot and Game Pro:

-Most gamers will find their fledgling hours in the game a pretty challenging learning experience, but once you've worked your way through the first area onboard the federation starship, you'll be all set to get out there and tackle the rest of the game's challenges. And believe us when we say that there are a lot to be dealt with. As is the norm for the series, there's a lot of backtracking, re-exploring and map-searching to be done.

-The controls are the other part of the winning formula, and thanks to the nunchuck and Wii remote combo, first-person-style shooting has never been more accurate on Nintendo's new hardware.

-There are also a lot of brand new features that make Corruption feel fresh and new versus the two previous games.

-What you're left with then is a rock-solid end to the Metroid Prime series, and one that deserves to be played by fans and Wii owners alike. It's a fitting end to Samus' exploits and ranks highly in the Wii's current library of games. We feel that Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros. Brawl might be the only other Wii games coming this year that'll give Corruption a run for its money, and by that very definition, Corruption is a must-play game.

If you eliminate Gamespot and Game Pro from the reviews (just off of the basis of their experience being completely different from all other reviewers) then the average is a 9.4.

Game Pro's Score breakdown:

  • GRAPHICS: 4.50/5.0
  • SOUND: 4.00/5.0
  • CONTROL: 4.00/5.0
