Forums - Gaming Discussion - Halo Wars gets 6.5/10 from Gamespot!!

I'm not a MS or Halo fan, but I must admit that, if true, making a RTS playable and enjoyable with a pad is quite an achievement.
Like for the original Halo, its major merit, more than sheer quality and innovation compared to their PC counterparts, could be to launch a new genre on consoles in a big way.

Big difference between a bad score from Maxim (who the hell even knows they do game reviews? When did they start giving every sexy chick magazine reviewer cred?) and one from IGN or Gamespot. Also 6.5 seems to be a normal score for the range Halo Wars seems to be getting (there are two 7s and two 9s from other sources under Gamespots critics reviews. Surprise, Official Xbox magazine gives it a 9, didn't see that coming)

As to the video review Gamespot is right, it does look pretty meh overall. Of course I've spent at least 12 of the last 24 hours playing Dawn of War 2 so my expectations for RTS games are higher then normal.

Really though, if you want to play as space marines and have a decent PC Dawn of War 2 is VASTLY superior to any RTS that has come out since World in Conflict, its just awesome.

In Halo Wars defense though, Console RTS games pretty much always suck, even ports of good PC games like C&C 3 or That Lord of the Rings strategy series aren't nearly as good on consoles so a lot of the complaints in the review (awkward controls, limited choices, hard to make custom squads ect) can be levied against almost all 360 console games. They really just need to make mouse/keyboard an option like the PS3 does (and obviously the PC does).

Lets hope they make Halo Wars for the PC then I'll try it out, Bungee actually does have some serious RTS cred from their VERY awesome Myth games they made on the mac back in the late 90s. They were seriously awesome for the time (and one of the first base free veterancy RTS games I've played, they were also the first to have real arrow and grenade physics, was awesome). If Halo Wars was one tenth the game Myth 2 was it would be an instant classic, unfortunately it doesn't seem to have worked out that way.

Another guy who didn't visit my thread: http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=59305&start=50

Gamespot's score is the lowest and I've tracked already 70 reviews. The average score is 83 !!!

You do realize Bungie did not make this game, right?  Also, 6.5 is not the normal score.  In fact 8.2 is the normal score.

Halo is a great game, and I don't want to take anything away from the excellent job Bungie did with fps on a console.  But I wouldn't overlook Goldeneye as the game that helped move the genre to consoles.  Halo also had the advantage of dual analog sticks, this controller innovation opened the door for the style of fps we enjoy today on consoles.  That being said, there has been no controller innovation that will improve console RTS control schemes.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

To be fair, even Robbie Bach doesn't seem to be aware of the fact that Bungie didn't make Halo Wars.

I didn't say 6.5 was the average, I said in the context of the decidedly mixed reviews 6.5 isn't an outlier. Edge gave it a 7, 1up a 7.5 ect. 6.5 makes sense in the context of the other reviews (and none of the reviews, even the Xbox magazine ones, are particularly glowing compared with other big releases like Gears of War 2 or Halo 3).

Maxim's review was surprising given that a lot of outlets have given Killzone 2 a perfect score (10 or 5 out of 5) so a 7 seems outside the 8-10 range. 6.5 is not really outside the range at all in this case and after watching the video review makes perfect sense.

I forgot the Ensemble made Halo Wars thing, that was a mistake on MS's part. Bungee is a much better RTS developer then Ensemble which makes competent but unexceptional games. Myth was a very exceptional game unlike any of the Age of Empires games which were just competent RTS games that did nothing in particular better then every other almost identical game (Rise of Nations, Empire Earth ect).

On a side note devs need to stop taking their best licenses, farming them out to inferior studios and watching them go to s**t. Bioware does it giving their best games over to Obsidian which makes not nearly as good sequels to gems like KOTOR and Neverwinter Nights, here Bungee does it when they would have done a MUCH better job keeping it in house...

To give you the 9.0 or better Bungee version based on myth here it is. You have armies but NO BASES, instead you have a squad that deploys in the field. As they survive they become vets with better abilities to hit enemies and survive longer. You also get Master Chief style hero characters which are more powerful then normal soldiers but still fight along side them. You are expected to, with a team of no more then two dozen units, fight off hordes of flood and covenant with no back up. There would be a strong feeling of being deep in enemy territory and heavily outnumbered (which is what Halo is all about at its best right?).

There actually is more or less that game I described above, its called Dawn of War 2, its awesome, you should play it. Regardless though, Bungee could have made a very good Halo Wars if they had taken it upon themselves instead of making it a half assed license cash in. I really do hope now that they're indy again Bungee will make a new proper RTS game, its been too long (the squad multiplayer in particular was fast paced and awesome).

There is a website which gave Halo Wars a 10/10.

By your logic it's not out of the range, because 10/10 is closer to the current average score than the 6.5 from Gamespot.

average score is 83, which is still awful for a Halo game, if you think Halo 3 got 9.5 and above, it's like saying Halo Wars is as good as House of the Dead Overkill, where Halo Wars should be over 90 if you think of aaaall that hype and so on

also, Gamespot is considered as the most reliable gaming source

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^
