Forums - Sony - Rumor: PSM Editor in Chief being Canned (

It had nothing to do with poltics. It was just the easiest example that could be brought up that most people would understand. For example, that countdown guy who constantly takes shots at O'Reily would likely be fired if he were on fox news. Just how O'Reily would be fired if he worked for CNN. Some networks will put up with more if you target one poltical party then the other. Just how a magazine like PSM wouldn't take to hitting PS games hard as well as EGM would.

In this particular matter I totally agree with Kasz216. There is no room for bashing Sony in Sony devoted mag. People who buy it definitely don't want it.

I disagree that they are bashing Sony.  They apparently only fairly reviewed 2 games.

I think the readers want this fairness.  I certainly wouldn't be happy if they reviewed a game 10/10 and bought it only to regret it due to the biased review.  They can still hype future titles and the console without crossing this line into bias.

@Thermal7, you've just put in words of what I meant in my post, well said ;)

I can't agree that in official company mags there shouldn't be any criticism towards the company's own products. I remember those Nintendo Power mags in which the reviewers would take a decent amount of shots at games that failed to deliver whatever they were expected to. Denying that your games aren't the hit they were supposed to be is a cardinal sin in my book. I'd be disapointed with a game like lair after reading the review but would definitely be happy to own such a mag like PSM, just for the sake of criticism.

Also just for people to note, PSM is not owned by Sony.
I'm pretty sure its part of the 1UP network, but I cant be arsed checking.

It's owned by the same people who make "The Official Playstation Magazine" in the UK. It basically beat the one owned by Sony out of buisness. Considering it's a magazine soley about Sony stuff however it relies on the good graces of Sony to have a magazine worth reading. So they likely do have some influence.

More likely however it was just the head of the publishing company realizing that bad reviews for games that are supposed to be big titles is bad for the magazine as far as readers go, and with there relationship with Sony.

I don't get this. If I was reading a magazine, I'd want them to tell me truthfully whether a game is good or bad, not just sit there and say how great Sony is.

If a game is bad I need to know, so I don't waste my money buying it.

Help! I'm stuck in a forum signature!

The real problem is that a lot of Sony fanboys, just like almost all fanboys, just want to hear what pleases their ears... They are very likely to be convinced that the truth is what they want to hear. If IGN, EGM, Gamespot and all kinds of media reviewers give bad scores to their "OMG GREATZ GAMEZ", they tend to ignore them and just look to the "OMG THIZ IZ GREATZ NEWZ" and on major time to accuse the firsts of be biased and "don't like my system"...

And it seems that this is the public PSM is looking for...

Sad but true.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Well I think a magazine like PSM has to be positive about games and accesories related to the PS3 .Its not a case of a game being 2/10 and them giving it 10/10 but of in case of different approach to evaluate a game take the optimistic one and see the bottle nearly full instead of bashing it for not being completely fulll .

Some Playstation mags and specially this one are recently letting themselves slide in the negative vibe surrounding the machine .Thing is ,that negative vibe has originated and breeds on xbox and nintendo webs ,blogs ,official magazines etc .If you run one PS mag or blog or whatever you must be optimistic and not assume the viewpoints of your rivals about "if the PS3 isnt twice as powerful as the 360 then it doesnt worth it because it is more expensive and each and every game must be reviewed taking that in count and if a port from the 360 has one texture worse in a second file charachter then I put the cry on the sky about the 360 version being better and the PS3 useless and devoid of sense " .

Being inmerse in the universe of the gaming websites and blogs is difficult to put things in perspective ,and maybe this guy just couldnt .If you keep things in perspective the PS3 has better games than the 360 last year ,it is a reliable and well constructed machine ,the online works about as good as the most optimistic expected ,the ports it is receiving are at least improving and some of the later (GRAW2 ,Colin DIRT ) are as good if not better than the 360 versions ,the sales if not gigantic are good enough to keep pace with the 360 ones even with the huge price ,there are exclusives coming ,Home coming ,etc etc .Great games as Warhawk and HS are being released ,etc etc .

If you are about to bash any Sony game because " it isnt the radical leap they promised us " or "this doesnt look as good as E32005 render " or " its framerate drops once in a section the 360 version doesnt " then you dont have any place in a Playstation centered mag .You should join Major Nelson at the MS blog ,but not drag a Playstation magazine into pessimism and overcritizing .You must say if a game is funny ,if it as good graphics ,if its long ,if the multiplayer works well enough .if the maniability is at the top ....and thats all .Not lying ,but not being so critic ...when a mag like Edge rates PS3 games better than PSM then you are into something about the editorial line of PSM .

I don't think you can be so absolutist about it.  I think generally if a reviewer likes a game they will give it a high score.  However, they have preferences and biases just like everyone.  They are supposed to rise above them and to review the game from a regular gamers perspective, but who knows how reliably this happens.  Maybe they hate hack and slash games, females as main avatars, etc.  Mabye their wife just left them, or they haven't being sleeping recently.

Anyway, I am just saying you can't reliably draw conclusions from one review score on one game.

Isn't this the guy who bashed home and trophies as copies of 360 stuff, and said that Microsoft would come up with something better quite soon?

Haven't heard that. He was the guy who basically told Sony to copy Live in an editorial because they hadn't managed to make a good online system yet.

To cash in my CC rewards points for $300 in Circuit City gift cards to purchase a 360 or not: That is the question.

I agree with that completely, and to emphasise what you already said (in case people missed it), this is for fanboys of any system, not just sony
