I absolutely hated New Super Mario Bros. What a waste of time.

True, it's hard to think of any other franchise that has had a ton of spinoffs and yet not fallen apart.  FF and Sonic both come to mind, but as I said don't even come close ... and Sonic has sort of fallen apart, though it's not the fault of the spinoffs.  FF meanwhile is (I hate to say it) pretty much masturbating to its own history. 

I have to agree with the conclusion, that there really never has been a bad game in the main Super Mario series - sure Super Mario Bros 2 strafed a bit away from the classic formula - but back then every gamer regarded as a very good game, and it still introduced many classic Mario concepts we take for granted to day - like being able to go back in a level, classic enemies like the pokey's and shy guys, the ability to lift and carry items and the different play styles of the chooseable characters, like the more lightweigted Luigi or Peach's floating jumps, which since has become synonymous with these characteres, when ever you were able to plays as them, in the franchise or spin off's..

Regarding Super Mario Sunshine, I can easily understand the crittic it has been seeing - partircually in retroperspective - but bever the less the game exceeded on it's predecessor in almost every way, and scorred impressive reviews when it was relased - which in itself is no easy task - especially when you take into consideration that most 3D platformeres useually are met with hard reviews and critique since it apperently is a difficult genre to master for most developers..
Of course the game didn't feel as fresh or innovative as Super Mario 64 which is quite understandable since you can't reinvent a genre with every new entry in a series.
And some probably feel that the whole setting of the tropical island or the water cannon addition wasn't in the true spirit of the Mario univers - which I guess is a matter of opnion and perception. Personally I felt that the abstraction from the typical lava and desert levels didn't hurt Mario at all, even though though it could probably had been a bit more varied. But gameplay vise (yhe waterhose included) - the gameplay basicly expanded on Super Mario 64 on all levels..

I guess the critque is sorta like the same, that some of the later Zelda games have seen - that they didn't feel fresh or innovative enough. Perhaps some people have become so accostumed with Nintendos high quality and impresvive level of innoavation and reinventions of genres, especially in term of their main 2 franchises (Mario and Zelda), that whenever one of these 2 franchises fail to almost reinvent a genre (like Super Mario Galaxy did again), people almost feel a bit disapoited. But the fact alone that these games has created these almost impossible expactions, whenever there's a new one on the way, and at the same time useually manage to meet them, should say something alone about the Mario and Zelda franchises and Nintendo as a company..

Not for me, i have loved every main Mario game i've played, probably SMB2 is the least favorite but it was very interesting and different, and i think SMS is underrated

Um, yeah. How could I forget that? I own four copies of Mario Bros. (SMA1-4).

Never liked Mario sunshie nor Mario 64. I found them very tedious.

But that's more a matter of personal taste. I don't think they are bad.
