Forums - Gaming - Review numbers are ridiculous. I now pledge I will not use them at all.

IMO they should just group numerical scores into grades and NEVER reveal the games numerical score.

For example:

A - 89+

B - 80-88

C - 70-79

and so forth

game X and Y could both be graded as A's yet the numerical difference between the two wouldn't be known.

Obviously there's still the same problems with a numerical based rating system but at least you've minimized the problems (as far as I see anyway). I do think some kind of rating system should be used in addition to the written review. Although, I wish that rating system would be standardized across all review sites.

We moved past that.

You moved past it.

All the industry did was shift from a 2-10 scale to a 6-10 scale and start using decimal points.

He was talking about literature at that point.  "We" as in the literary community, have moved past that.  That is true.

I don't see any evidence of that.  Right now I see an entire industry mostly satisfied with their near meaningless ratings with a few people who complain about them.  Even vgChartz is now sporting its own meaningless numeric rating system with reviews.

IGN recently gave a 0.8 to one piece of shovelware. I'm sure few other reviewers bothered to look at it, and there are many other shovelware games which even IGN didn't want to waste paid labour and bandwidth on.

Why was it a 0.8?  Why not a 0.9 or a 0.7?  Why not a 1.3?  What's the difference between all those scores?

I completely agree. If anything, the verdict should be "Buy", "Rent" or "Don't Buy". After all, that's what people who read review want to know.

I agree.  Maybe even take it a step further and qualify it to other games.  Such as, if you like this genre or game, it is a buy, if not, rent.

I agree with your frustrations. In terms of overall review score, it is probably best to look at the aggregate not individual score. I will only read a handful of reviews from sites that I trust. I pay particular attention to the actual reviewer. It would be nice if each reviewer had a listing of games and their previous review scores so I could get a better sense of their point of view.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Agree. I buy whatever games I want without heeding review scores (just look at ToS; DotNW scores...6s? lol not even.)

Reviews are a POS. Sometimes nice to look at, but that's it.

Not agreeing with review scores as a concept because you think there is something inherently wrong with trying to assign a numerical quality to a game is different than not agreeing with review scores because reviewers don't like your favorite franchise.

...

I always check IGN and Eurogamer before getting a game.

i read reviews if i am interested in the game but. but i also dont really pay attention to the reviews i bought operation darkness

there definitely needs to be an executive summary though (not the pros and cons) but a "recommended/not recommended" sort of thing.

You missed the point again.  He is not talking about video games at this point.  He is talking about things like books and plays.  Actual literature.
