Record turnover sees videogames smash sales record

Sales of videogames break new ground as they breach the three billion Swedish kronor mark.

Videogame sales topped 7.7 million units, a 34 percent increase from 2007. The figures show a clear shift towards the present generation consoles, with the Playstation 3, Wii and Xbox 360 experiencing massive sale increases in 2008. Demand for new full priced titles also contributed to the growth.

“The new games offer an unbeatable experience with many hours of entertainment, which makes them great value for money,” said Johan Mannerhill, chairman for MDTS, which makes up one half of the Swedish Games Industry,

The sharp increase in value can also be attributed to games bundled with accessories. The players invested in games such as: Wii Fit which is sold with a balance board as well as Guitar Hero: World Tour which comes with a full instrument pack.

“Through innovation within new franchises and a steady stream of add-ons and improvements to existing titles, games have been able to appeal to new as well as more established gamers. The potential and belief in what games are capable of as a form of entertainment are factors that drive the industry to supersede itself time and time again,” Martin Lindell, an analyst at the Swedish Games Industry highlighted.

PC games sales have however fallen, which can be attributed to social gaming: i.e. more and more gamers play with their friends in front of their flat screen TVs. Digital distribution, which has increased in notoriety, is also not taken into account. This is because most sales of digital software occur on international servers and through external parties, who in the present climate refuse to divulge their sales figures. However with the local market maturing and more Swedish alternatives popping up, the goal is to include figures of digital distribution in 2009’s statistics.

Not bad with a population of only 9 million people

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

Both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 outsold the Wii in software units?

That was unexpected.

Rainbird, did you get a reply about the Danish numbers before? I'd like to put together a Scandinavian comparison. Norway data is only value though, so I need to find some unit data for there too.

Wii X360 PS3 NDS PSP PS2 Total Total Incl. PC

I'm ashamed of my country for shafting the Wii like this ;_;

@ BKK2

No, sadly not. Actually, they haven't replied to my mail in any way...

EDIT: @ Majin

Sweden is all hardcore territory! xD

EDITEDIT:

The PS3 and Xbox 360 outsold the Wii in Finland too. Scandinavia hardcorez territory confirmed?!

woah the PS3 easily zoomed by the Wii and DS in software units & revenue - and those plattforms really sold that much better in scandinavia considering sweden is the biggest scandinavian market ?

That's mean in sweden ?

PS3 2008 = 586090 sold in 2008?

(LTD in 2007 = 395022 LTD in 2008 =981122)

Am i the only person surprised to see the PS2 selling the most consoles?

Those are software units per year, not cumulative, so PS3 sold nearly 1m software units in 2008.

Anyway, the following isn't perfect as the Danish figure probably includes hardware, and the Norwegian figure does not include Microsoft published software, but it does give us a pretty good idea of the value of the Scandinavian software market in 2008:

2008 Software Value:

Local Euros Notes
Sweden 3,030,359,451 280,277,067
Denmark 900,000,000 121,641,000 Incl. HW
Norway 668,451,517 67,915,569 Excl. MS
Finland
86,500,000
Total
556,333,636

Euro was calculated from the X-rate as of 01/01/09.

Adjusting for the extra Danish hardware value, and missing Norwegian Microsoft data would probably put the Scandinavian software market at somewhere around €520m ($727m as of 01/01/09).
