Empire: Total War is possible for GOTY but I doubt it.
Alan Wake mite, Starcraft 2 is also a contender.
Killzone 2 is out of the contest though (already down at 92% on GR doesnt bode well).
What else we've got?

Depends if they bring Starcraft II and/or Diablo III in 2009.

It has a good chance, Total War games are my favourite games, and I have spent ages trying to work out how they could make a WWII era game... but giving me naval battles and the whole world will satisfy me for now, I can't wait! I just need to get a wireless keyboard and mouse so that I can play it on my HDTV
I perdict:
Alan Wake 94% - GOTY
Starcraft 93%
Dragon Age: Origins 92%
Empire Total War 92%
Bioshock 2: 92%
Resident Evil 5: 92%
Killzone 91%
Mafia II 91%
Uncharted 2: 91%
Half-Life 2: Episode 3: 91%
Halo ODST: 91%
Note: God ov War III will slip to 2010 but would of got 92%.

Alan Wake. I had totally forgotten about that. I've been trying to think of what's going to be the big 360 game this year, mostly because i have it figured out for all the other platforms (criteria is that it has to either be a console exclusive or a timed exclusive, so that, say, Fable or Resident Evil 4 could count, but not GTAIV, and i came up with: Wii Sports Resort, Gran Turismo 5, Dragon Quest IX, and Resistance Retribution). Just one of my little timewasters, but when i couldn't think of a 360 game that really stood

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
PC game of the year you mean? and it's got tough competition this year, so probably nah.

Review scores have nothing to do with GoTY. IGN gave MGS4 and GTA4 10/10, but gave GoTY to Fallout 3.
However, it doesn't have a very good chance, because of how early in the year it is releasing.
| bugrimmar said: It's early in the year, there are a bunch of great games coming out this year, Empire is a month away from release, but I'm willing to make the claim now. Empire: Total War will erase every single claim about PC gaming being dead. It will be 2009 game of the year. Game of the century even! rawr. |
Hmm, another person who doesn't remember the previous CA releases and how buggy they were at launch. After going through Shogun, Rome, MTW and M2TW, the games were buggy as hell, bland and repetitive until 2 or 3 official patches came out, followed by the sensational user created mods. It is the same everytime CA launches a game. Who played vanilla M2TW after the first 2 months? Noone. The same will be said of Empire. Playable, repetitious with lots of potential, the game will shine when mods in similar stature to Deus Lo Vult or EB are made for it.
@grooski
rome total war was a serious goty candidate
why are people giving so much credit to alan wake, when A.) there aren't any gameplay trailers about it yet, and B.) there's hardly any information about the game available?
If it doesn't have an Xbox 360 version its not worth it. Strategy games -> Definately superior on the 'box!
