==> HUH ?!?

have I really say this ? I ...I never use "bother" ?
are u sure this sentence is from me ?
because I will not say this IF, as u stated, I continue to post on this thread ...

Whatever, about casual or not on LBP,

let's say that the level creation is not something that may appeal casual gamer a lot cause u have to spend time on it
BUT, overall, even if LBP is not directly a "casual targeted" game, for me, I think it could attract them as it may attract hardcore too.

Joe-L.  Perhaps you are not cut out for this whole posting on the boards thing.  This is not the end of the world.  You have really seem to let slip a bit too much violence into your post that doesn't seem to fit something that we all just do for fun.  I think maybe you should relax, take a walk.  Do something constructive with your energy until you get past this moment.  It's really not worth getting upset.  /No Sarcasm.

Feel free to make your argument, I just don't see what aspect of the game is all that hardcore. If you feel it is, then you should at least have a few points you can raise to back your opinion. You shouldn't feel like you have to insult people to get them to listen but you should also be able to rationalize your opinions for others if you are going to disagree with them.

Let me start of by saying not much of any people are even talking about block, and are saying LBP is a casual game.( its as hardcore as mario to my opinion)

But LBP is a casual game (whatever that may be) just as Blocks is (which is my main point-- I really don't care that they are a lot alike).

You have to agree that both games are essentially about the following three things are fun: creating, moving (physics), and sharing. It doesn't matter that one is a platformer and the other is a puzzlerl; that shows the different approaches the developers took. So now that we agree that the important parts are the same, why is Blocks casual and LBP hardcore? Why do people take such offense when you call LBP a casual game? That's what I'm curious about.

Because the hardcore are interested in the game, not the casual gamers, they think its a little kid game(How do I know? Im in high school and I showed some friends LBP and they said it was g@y) So casuals are not interested in LBP as much as the hardcore are.

So because hardcores are interested in a game, that makes it hardcore? Well lets see, every gamer I know loves Rayman Raving Rabbids. I never met anyone that didn't love Warioware that didn't love it after playing it with 4 or more people. Mind you these are all hardcore gamers I'm talking about. Who doesn't like Wii Sports? People say Wii Play is stupid fun all the time. Lets see, Elebits is supposed to be pretty casual and hardcore players thought that was pretty fun. Do I really need to go on?

So since hardcore players all loved those games they officially aren't casual games. What the Hell Nintendo!? Where are my casual games!?

ah, whoops, sorry for the mixup then.  [*quote] tags are a wonderful thing, they are MUCH clearer than your silly way of writing posts...

I can see the comparison with LBP with physics emphasis and level editor, but it ends about there. The gameplay in particular looks completely different as do character designs. I think LBP has a more inviting atmosphere too: richer colors, big variety, cute-looking characters. That being said, Blocks still looks like a very interesting game. But as everyone else said before me, LBP looks way better.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

I see how they have a similar appeal, but I have to agree with the majority of the thread that the gameplay of the games is very different. Honestly both look great. I knew nothing about Blocks until you posted this thread so thanks hehe.

noted twesterm, I will make effort and use the "quote system" :D

Just for the record I never really commented on the similarities, I only said LBP was casual.

Anyways, @Leo,

Back during the 4th of July I was showing my folks the trailers for a bunch of games, mostly Wii just to gauge the non-gamer reaction to them. But LBP was one I felt they would like and sure enough they thought it looked like a lot of fun. Does that automatically make it casual by virtue of the fact that "less than casual" gamers liked it?

I personally think to be considered hardcore a game it would need to at least have a storyline or background info. Granted there are other things to being hardcore than just story but I can't think of any games I would consider hardcore that don't have a story....

So in another thread we started talking about the differences in Blocks for the Wii and Little Big Planet for the PS3. To me, it's perfectly clear that they are completely similar games but to others they believe that they are as different as night and day. I will admit that I don't fully know what the gameplay is in LBP (other than physics, building, and sharing) but they are still essentially the same game. As long as this doesn't turn into an outright flame war it seems like this could be a decent thread so I decided to make it.

As for Blocks (short video here), it seems like a fairly casual puzzle game having to do with physics simulations. From what I've seen and read, these appear to be the base gameplay ideas for the game:

  1. a physics simulator
  2. a level editor
  3. something to share with friends
  4. cartoon style art
  5. puzzle based

That doesn't seem like something to me that will have the masses anticipating the release of this game, but with Spielberg's name, EA backing it, and a wide variety of hooks the game will more than likely do well.

So now we look at Little Big Planet for the PS3. This is another casual game that has to do with building, sharing with friends, and having fun with physics simulators. Pardon me for not knowing the actual gameplay for this game, I did a few quick reads but the main idea behind this game appears to be sharing in a community. If someone knows the gameplay for this game (whether it's puzzle, platformer, whatever) tell me and I'll happily fill it in. Anyways, here are the base gameplay ideas for Little Big Planet:

  1. a physics simulator
  2. a level editor
  3. something to share with your friends
  4. somewhat realistic style of art
  5. -=insert gameplay here=-

Just like with blocks, this shouldn't be something that will have the masses waiting in line but it has been decently hyped (and more than likely see more about it as it gets closer to release) and has a wide variety of gameplay hooks that will help draw people in.

Now, if you take a second to look, you'll notice that these are more or less the same game. The main hooks of these games are that you get to play with physics, build your own levels with a detailed level editor, and you get to share this user created content with friends. The only differences are possibly the gameplay and the art style. Why are people having such a hard time believing that these two games are so similar?

Is it because the PS3 crowd doesn't want to believe that a casual game that people are excited about has infected their console? Wii owners don't want to think that possibly they might have a game that was copied from a PS3 game? If both appear to be equally fun and get about the same score would PS3 owners have to admit that the art style isn't what made the game fun? Am I just completely missing an aspect of either game that makes these games so different? It just completely confuses me why people are so hard to believe that these games are so similar.

"Now, if you take a second to look, you'll notice that these are more or less the same game. " Er, sorry twesterm -- I usually agree with you -- but NO! What you have demonstrated with your (very interesting) bullet points is that they are different games using many of the same elements and tools. It's a bit like saying that Halo 3 is essentially the same game as Metroid Prime 3 or Bioshock. Well...NO, it's not. Part of that is that one is multiplayer and the others are not. (LBP is multiplayer; I would guess that Blocks is not, but I don't know. Is it?) But although they do have many similarities, these games go in totally different directions in building up from the basic framework they all inhabit. (FPS-style gameplay) This is kind of an inverse example of LBP/Blocks, which seem to converge from very different basic frameworks (Platformer, puzzle/building-blocks) A puzzle game is not "more or less the same game" as a platformer, even if they use more or less the same elements/tools to draw more or less the same crowd. If the second statement is your true contention, then we don't disagree much. P.S. I would say that LBP has very realistic graphics depicting a whimsical/fantastical world, instead of "somewhat realistic graphics". But this I recognize as a very minor, nitpicky point.
