Forums - Nintendo - Should Metroid Be Like Halo? How would they do it?

@rickthestick2,

The fact that Retro themselves calls it a FPA does tell you something about what they wanted it to be, though I agree, it is not generic. Probably why they prefer to call it FPA than FPS(ususally synonymous with more of the same).

Kind of like Geist. It is called a FPS, but I see it more of a possession based puzzle game with FPS elements to move things along.

Saying Metroid should be like Halo is like saying Motorstorm should be more like Street fighter. No one who has actually played Metroid Prime would even think to compare the two in any way shape or form.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

So true. Beautifully put.

I played most of the first metroid for GC its pretty fun, but it should stay the way it was, Halo is Halo for a reason and there is no way they could try to do that, but adding a Co-Op mode sounds like fun for any game.

Yeah. The reason that the widespread use of FPA for the Primes is because its so different from what people would expect from a FPS. While i agree that metroid is an "adventure in the first person", the game is a FPS because the game has a heavy focus on shooting, and throughout most of the game you'll find yourself pressing that A button (or B).

Simply put, Prime is a FPS, but its more than that, and FPS doesn't describe the game justly, so for a better description they/we name it FPA.

But what i hate is when people run with it, in a desperate attempt to make it "better than" or distant from Halo. They start to say its not a FPS at all, and get into this "elitist" mode. But people can believe what they like.

All the more reason to go with FPA. Sort of like why Jumping Flash is a FPP.

Hell no!!! I don't want to go on a planet with not a lot of variety and just shoot, collect some troopers then move ahead and shoot again. I love the dynamic environments in the Primes and I love the morphball puzzles the most... and judging from the vids I'll the new puzzles as well.

NO NO NO NO. Metroid's gameplay is so much more innovative and entertaining [SP] than Halo's. God when I played Halo I expected something god-like after all that hype and media rave. Unfortunately for Halo I had just played Prime.. and it made it look SO generic I couldn't get past the 3rd mission.

It is a hardcore game through and through. You will get your ass kicked by bosses. You will be stumped by the sometimes complex, but never overbearing, exploration.

I wouldn't mind fooling around with a well thought out(fits the story and atmosphere) multi-player mode in Metroid games. But I'd much rather that time and manpower be used in crafting the single player game. The Metroid games are arguably the best games of all time. So as long as the newer games live up to their pedigree, I could care less if they have multi-player.

Well considering from the first metroid you had a gun and shot enamies while exploring it hasnt changed much from that formula. what changed is it jumped from 2D to 3D and that forced elements in the game to change. Basic concept stayed the same, your a bad ass bounty hunter thats got a job to do and damit ur gona do it. Only thing that has changed from my point of view is they have added more of a story line inside the game. They basically had to because its freakin 3D world, alot more to explore and way easier to get lost. No story/goal (objective) = no adventure in the game. So updating the game is what they did by bringing it into 3D and things had to be added to make the game run smoothly. Saying its Halo like is over stating the impact halo has had in the world of video games. Might be a popular franchise but it didnt do anything better, or invent anything new all it did was bring PC experience to the console. PC FPS/FPA very popular for a long time so nothing amazing in my eyes. Saying that, How do you show an army of space pirates fighting samus in 3D? you put an army of space pirates in the game.

What i do think the Wii might need is a FPS game built with multiplayer in mind from the ground up, and i dont think Metroid is the franchise to sacrafice for that.

I dont think metroid should be more like halo.. but a larger environment would be cool.
