How many non-tournament players give a shit about what tournament players do?
Mouse is still the best. Wiimote is 2nd best. They key to good competitive FPS control is in the sensitivity of the pointing device.
And once again, by "best" I don't mean your personal preference. One reason UT3 multiplayer wasn't made cross-platform compatible between PS3 and PC is because gamepad users would get creamed.
The same would happen if a cross-console multiplayer FPS were released - the pointing device users would come out on top.
Actually that would be an awesome game, I'd call it "Console Wars"
Again you give proof that the Mouse is superior, now I want you to do the same for Wiimote, and not just say "if it happened it would be better"
Until that point then yes, it is just personal preference and your idea that the mouse keyboard set up is applicable to the Wiimote - Nunchuck.
...
We might be able to run real-world, scientific test today, actually. I'm not up on the latest Wiimote to PC news, but if they have pointer functionality working (and sensitivity adjustment) we could pit gamers using a gamepad and Wiimote against each other in a PC FPS.
Aside from aiming, that's the strongest benefit of a pointing device. Have you ever played an FPS with a mouse? It's the same was as you aim, you just point in that direction. The further in the direction you point, the faster you move, allowing for a much larger degree of turn speeds than on a joypad.
I have played with a mouse, and usually the aiming reticule remains steady in the center while the mouse turns you, this allows for fast turning based on how quickly you move the mouse, while you can still shoot. With a Wiimote the situation is different, turning depends on you pointing at a certain part of the screen, I would suspect that this would make turning and shooting more difficult on the Wii than on the PC or the gamepad. For certain games this works fine, such as RE4 since the console version doesn't allow you to strafe anyway and you always have to stand still before you shoot, but other games such as Unreal Tournament where turning has to be extremely fast and precise it would be a detriment. This, coupled with the fact that noone holds a wiimote as steadily as they do a mouse, and I think the difference between the mouse and Wiimote are much greater than you are assuming.
I don't think the Wiimote is better in all FPS situation as you seem to think, I believe the two are just different, and which you prefer will simply come down to preference and particular situation.

-R1 and 2 I couldn't stand, so I'm not even gonna try to defend them. -Halo 1 was the first true Console FPS, which led to the all console FPS today, while 2/3 were anything but generic, due to its massive reforms to multiplayer, and huge amounts of content for players and friends. -If you ragged on the original CoD, I would've been able to say something, it was stunning for its time. But again, Don't care to much for CoD 5. -Why the hell did you even include the Darkness? It wasn't even that good. -Unreal Tournament: High octane, insanely fast paced combat based on huge feilds that is made to be more traditional then other games. Not generic, traditional. -Left 4 Dead: Oh HELL no you didn't just say Left 4 Dead was generic. There is no game like this anyway, and even the ZOMBIEs are original. They run faster then you do for crying out loud, and versus mode is an innovation the FPS world had almost never seen before. Different spawn points, and the game plays differently every time you play it. I'm not saying Conduit is generic, since I've yet to hear anything about it. I'm just pointing out how stupid your examples are. |
