Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Xbox vs Xbox 360 market shares

I did some basic comparing between the shares of respective market, we all know that the 360's shares are shrinking but I don't think they will stabilize at the low levels of the original xbox.

Xbox:

USA 21%

Europe 14%
Japan 2%

Xbox 360

USA 53%
Europe 45%
Japan 9%

well, this comparence is pretty stupid now since the xbox360 had a 1 year head start, so you have to take that into account eh?

Those are some very interesting numbers, and they show what I've suspected all along; MS are riding everything on North America, which is shortsighted and very assuming at the least.
There's no way they'll beat the PS3 WW if this continues, the PS brand is a big seller in Europe once the prices go down.
A couple of years down the line, things will return to their usual selves, with Xbox below Playstation, and I'm not sad about it even one bit... That's what they get for shoddy tactics and all but overlooking the entire world outside NA.

The PS2 still has the biggest user share even within the US. According to NPD research for June 2007 there are well more people playing on the PS2 than there are people playing on the XBox, XBox 360 (half the playtime spent on the XBox), the Nintendo Wii and Gamecube combined!

We are still at the very early stages of this generation, without the PS2 dying anytime soon (unlike XBox and GameCube).

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

360 is only 1 million ahead of the original xbox if you align release dates.

Considering the 1 year headstart for XBox 360 I think the 2007 marketshares are more interesting. Using VGChartz numbers I get the following numbers:

I don't think this paints a very positive picture for XBox 360, although the percentages are still higher than the original XBox percentages.

Btw ioi, I see your Wii numbers for others are 828k for the end of 2006, while I'm pretty sure Nintendo reported only shipping 800k units to others until the end of 2006, so you might want to tweak those numbers a little.

How can the X360 appeal to all markets like either Nintendo Wii or PS3 does?I think it has to be with that MS is American so thats JPN voided right away and why in EU(PAL(Others)) this i dont know.

Nice numbers koffieboon, thoses numbers are painful for X360 except in NA which are quite good but thats because the X360 is very popular there.

Why is the X360 so popular in NA and not so in JPN or EU(PAL)?
JPN dont buy from American companys much.
EU(PAL) i have no idea.

They're bringing out Japanese rpgs, what else exactly do you want or expect them to do?  The Japanese are unwilling to pick up a 360 no matter how low the price is or what's packed in.  The PS3 sold more than the 360 with basically no games, and even games that would sell in the many hundreds of thousands if not millions on other consoles in Japan sell only a small portion of that on the 360.  What more can they do?  Pay for the development of even more rpgs (they're paying for at least 3 more big unannounced ones) all of which no matter how amazing they are (they could be the greatest rpgs of all time) they'd still very likely sell in the hundred thousand or less range.

Considering the 360 cost more I'd say that 1 million is pretty significant.  When you add it to the fact that the 360 will have a longer lifespan than the Xbox it's very likely that it's userbase will be well above the Xbox's levels.  Also the original Xbox had pricecuts much ealier in it's life than the 360 did.  It'll be interesting to see what happens to the 360 when it reaches the $200 price point.

By the time the Xbox reached $200 the console war was over.

The $50 price cut for the 360 boosted sales to 50k.. A $100 price cut could of put the sales over the Wii for the first time since last xmas. Again I feel Microsoft is doing too little too late.
