I'm buying a 360 this May (most likely the Elite) and I hope for the world's sake that I don't get an RROD. I've never had any video game console malfunction on me except for the NES.

You did good in MS's eyes.
You helped boost their sales.
Only the 360s made November (or later) 2008 are really RRoD-proof. The Falcon was only a mild improvement, heat-wise, over the original models. Half of a lot of RRoDs is still a lot.
The Jaspers (the latest model of 360), however, are pretty decent. They are brand-spanking new, however. Most retailers have probably cleared the shelves of Falcons by now, except for the Elite models, of which no Jaspers have ever been reported.
It'll say "12.1A" on the back, near where the plug goes into the power supply, if its a Jasper, instead of "14.2A" (a Falcon) or "16.5A" (an original Xenon or Zephyr)
You said yourself that the Elite was purchased 16 months ago, and may have been manufactured even longer ago.
What was the batch # on the Elite? Chances are it wasn't even a Falcon. We've always argued that the newer X360s are fine (Falcons and Jaspers) not the prior ones.
Again, please give us batch number. It should be something like 740, or around that.
Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Where do I find the Batch number on my 360?
Should be on the back with the MFG date.

That sucks. Try to get your hands on one of the later models, those are pretty solid now.

@ Bonkers:
Where are you located? MS repaired my 360 twice - and both times, they paid for shipping. This last time, in October, I had to find a box, but they paid for shipping - they e-mailed me a prepaid mailer.
You should call MS again - and they will likely give you a refund, provided you have a receipt for the shipping charges.
Karma's a bitch!
