Forums - Sales Discussion - Yahoo to masses: Don't buy a PS3 til April

Has anyone got links for when the 45nm Cell + RSX are coming? I can't find any stories about it, so is everyone just guessing that they will be in the PS3 by march or what?

How can Yahoo hate Sony? Given the PS3 is sold at a loss, stopping people from buying them for 3 months will save them money.

Never argue with idiots
They bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience

I believe this is just a nasty thing.

Say some people are planning to buy a PS3 before April, they hear of this and thus PS3 sales are lower in the upcoming months because of this. They will take up Yahoo's word for it and expect a price cut in April. Since Sony never confirmed this it may happen or may not.

If it does, sales will go up.

But if it does not, expect people to get upset with Sony, thinking they were the ones who confirmed the price cut right now. They will resort to calling Sony liars and greedy corporate guys.

This is false advertising and Sony needs to take action about it.

I think you need to check your definition of false advertising

It is because you are planting false hope into customers who will expect it to happen in April. Yahoo is basing this on what Patcher is saying and trying to make it sound official.

If it does not happen, customers wont blame Yahoo, they will see Sony as "teh Liarz".

Now if this was on MSN it would be funny.

Damn, if this spreads enough it might actually impact the already weak sales, especially in the US.

The problem isn’t that Yahoo is saying that Sony will reduce the price of the PS3 in April; the problem is that (practically) everyone is saying that Sony will be forced to reduce the price of the PS3 in the near future. The fact that people are seeing similar rumours from multiple credible sources means that they are far more likely to believe them; and, while many/most people will have a reason to buy it today and forego saving $50 or $100, a lot of people will hold off waiting for a price cut and if it doesn’t come (soon enough) may decide not to buy a PS3 or might buy something in its place.

Now, there's not much Sony can do to deal with this because they (really) can't afford the $1 Billion (or so) in lost revenue that it would cost the division (and company) to reduce the price of the PS3 at this time; and the longer the PS3 goes without reducing the price the more potential sales they lose.

The last problem Sony faces is the longer the PS3 goes without reducing the price the better Microsoft and Nintendo will be able to react to it, and the better the value of the PS3 will look compared to the alternatives. A $300 PS3 will look fairly attractive compared to a $200/$300 XBox 360 (especially with $200 Blu-Ray players) but doesn’t look as good against a $179/$250 XBox 360 (with $100 Blu-Ray players) and looks pretty crappy against a $150/$200 XBox 360 (with $75 Blu-Ray players).

Basically, Sony is in a position where everyone is saying that they need a price reduction, they can’t afford a price reduction, and the longer they maintain their price for the worse things will get.

"Ailing Sony, which is tipped to be about to post its first annual loss for 14 years, could well expect a significant sales boost if Pachter's prediction pans out."

Do they not realize that selling the PS3 at a lower price will make Sony lose even more money?

No, no they do not.

Its not like patchers career is analyzing the videogame market.
