The problem isn’t that Yahoo is saying that Sony will reduce the price of the PS3 in April; the problem is that (practically) everyone is saying that Sony will be forced to reduce the price of the PS3 in the near future. The fact that people are seeing similar rumours from multiple credible sources means that they are far more likely to believe them; and, while many/most people will have a reason to buy it today and forego saving $50 or $100, a lot of people will hold off waiting for a price cut and if it doesn’t come (soon enough) may decide not to buy a PS3 or might buy something in its place.

Now, there's not much Sony can do to deal with this because they (really) can't afford the $1 Billion (or so) in lost revenue that it would cost the division (and company) to reduce the price of the PS3 at this time; and the longer the PS3 goes without reducing the price the more potential sales they lose.

The last problem Sony faces is the longer the PS3 goes without reducing the price the better Microsoft and Nintendo will be able to react to it, and the better the value of the PS3 will look compared to the alternatives. A $300 PS3 will look fairly attractive compared to a $200/$300 XBox 360 (especially with $200 Blu-Ray players) but doesn’t look as good against a $179/$250 XBox 360 (with $100 Blu-Ray players) and looks pretty crappy against a $150/$200 XBox 360 (with $75 Blu-Ray players).

Basically, Sony is in a position where everyone is saying that they need a price reduction, they can’t afford a price reduction, and the longer they maintain their price for the worse things will get.
