Forums - Gaming - So, what if the Wii dominates?

So, you want characters to shout stronger expletives in games? I don't see why that would necessarily be out of the question if the Wii sells well. It's more a question of what the market and publishers will tolerate. If anything, you should worry about companies like EA buying more small developers. Remember what happened to Thrill Kill for the PS1.

So I guess this thread has finally concluded that if the Wii succeeds, then games will become unrealistic. And Kwaad views this as a bad thing because he likes realism. He likes to see real poeple running around in real worlds. Ok, I can understand that. I'm not going to nitpick you about your choice to support your argument (Gods of War) because I understand what you are trying to get at. But Kwaad, do you think that if the Wii dominates sales this generation that we will see an end to photorealism or more reality based games? This is a serious question from one faux analyst to another. How powerful a revolution do you perceive Nintendo to have on their hands if the Wii outsells the 360 and the PS3?

A couple of points: Firstly, I am now 32 (tomorrow!). When I was 18-25, I loved violence in games (it was something new and cool) - played heaps of Doom, Quake, etc. These days I have no interest in that at all. Im completely over 99% of FPS's (including 100% of war games, ultraviolent games, etc). Im interested in original ideas, new gameplay styles, and more. And probably most importantly - social games. Games that interest my wife, her mother, friends and the like. Secondly - I think it will be great for the industry if the Wii dominates. This INCLUDES Sony & MS. MS have already acknowledged the need to bring new customers into the games industry - Sony seem to be stuck in some form of technology driven, black hole timewarp. The Wii should be viewed as a "entry" device for gaming - something to get people to START playing games in the first place. Once people buy and own a Wii for a few years, they should have a lot more confidence around other game devices - and potentially this will could lead to a 360 or PS3 purchase. No matter how hard the others try, the Wii *will* end up being the casual gaming console of choice. The Wii-mote + low purchase price will see to that. This also leaves a significant amount of space (hard-core games) for the other two consoles. I really think it would have been terrible for the industry if the Wii had failed (it already has not) - in many ways it could have been the death knell for the industry. I really wish the industry promoted itself better (internally), rather than all this in-fighting that is occurring. They should see themselves competing against other industries - rather than against themselves.

FFXIII or the more plausible FFXIV to be Wii exclusives. I think one of the FFXIII Versus games is already going to appear on the Wii exclusively. All two of the Versus game might even appear on it, if the main FFXIII game cannot be moved to the Wii because of financial reasons(Sony giving Square tons of moneyhats). I think this will be the shocker for this year, ala DQIX appearing on the DS. Next year would be main FFIV going to the Wii.

I don't think gaming was close to dead. I'm not sure it ever will. But shams' remark about the consoles teaming up as it were would suggest weakness by the gaming industry. The current "My system is better than yours" motif has been used by many industries and has proven to be a surefire way to promote sales, not only for the product, but for the industry as a whole. Where would the NFL be if all the teams decided not to worry about defeating each other and only about how football is better than baseball, or futbol. Wii as an entry console. Now that is an interesting viewpoint. I think for the most part it is probably valid, too. But based upon my experience with Wii owners, most of them have been gaming for almost a decade. While I think the DS has made inroads with the female sector, I don't know if the Wii has actually made any gaming converts out of the non-gaming world. There don't seem to be enough Wii's on the shelf to support gamer demand, much less someone who has never played a game before. case in point, the long lines that people have to wait in to buy a Wii. I'm not so sure a non-gamer would wait in line for 15 hours to buy a game system. So, while I think that the Wii will eventually provide an interesting access point for non gamers, that distinction has not been made clear yet, regardless of the DS's history. Thw Wii is being sold on Zelda and Nintendo brand recognition. Let's face it, despite Nintendo's previous two offerings (or lack there0f) there were still 20 million Gamecubes sold. I would think that would equate to at least 15 million die hard fanboys clamoring to get their hands on a Wii right now.

I can't understand how the Wii is sold out everywhere except my town... i saw like 30 of them on a shop yesterday and today they were still there. Maybe Greece is not a Nintendo-Country

I also expect gaming to be very mainstream. People would be asking "wanna play mario party on the Wii" as an alternative to "wanna watch movies, I have a few dvds from netflix". Gaming would be cool, not a strange hobby only enjoyed by nerds and airheaded jocks.

Outside of parents who have to listen to their kids begging for a toy during the christmas season, precisely right. I'm interested to see where the Wii is once it's finally available to those who aren't willing to stand in line at 8am to pick one up. Anecdotal evidence from those who have played the console at my place would seem to indicate that there's strong interest.

If you have money, I think its smart to start buying them then ebay them for the UK and Western European countries.

If it dominates then the hardcore gamers are screwed .....light games and the extinction of the hardcore market lures ahead .I mean ,we have this gaming we know and love .....buuut everytime someones wants to "bring in more people " or as Iwata said " sell to casuals gamers " then you are stretching from the source and core of the original market ....if the success is so high that it becomes itself a way bigger market it can fagocitate the former market .If the X360 sells 25 and the PS3 30 million and the Wii sells 110 million and moves 5 times the software we could see the traditional plattforms and gaming genres screwed and put in the shadow to benefit the new and bigger market because it makes more profit .Thats quite clear .
