Forums - Sales - Way more Gold/Platinum Gamecube titles then suggested!

It appears there are way more Gamecube-titles that have passed the 250k, 500k or even 1 million bar then suggested on VGChartz. This is partially due to incomplete data which VGChartz is not to blame for! I just wanted to point this out to show that GC software was not that big of a failure and to show you can't just 'take for granted' this incomplete data in some cases.

Some quotes to back my claims of Gold/Platinum status up;

IGN: 'The Nintendo GameCube version of Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance sold 250,000 units, which qualified it for the Player's Choice standard. In total, Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance has sold through more than two million units worldwide since its release in November 2002'.

Wikipedia: 'label is also applied to Nintendo Gamecube games that sold more than 250,000 copies'.

As such, it means a title must have exceeded sales of 250k in a specific region (PAL, NTSC etc...) to qualify for the 'Player's Choice' label. Some games however, for example, The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Or Mario Kart: Double Dash. Were not granted the player's choice status due to their legs and continuing ability to sell decent amounts of software because of their 'status' and/or quality. An economic decision, as such.

However; if we look at the list of Nintendo Gamecube's Player's choice games we can see a lot of games were more succesful then suggested. This, because of the above explained economic decisions by Nintendo to not include several games, means this list should be taken as an absolute minimum as for the number of Gold/Platinum games.

Without furter ado, the list:

Nintendo GameCube

NTSC exclusive:

That's A LOT more succes then some might think!

Discuss! Or give a reaction.

* Not trying to take VGChartz for a spin here or something. I know, you know, and they know some of their games have missing sales-data. Which is totally understandable and I mean nothing by this. Just trying to show people by a simple way of putting some logical things together how some software actually sold on Gamecube.

Some nice games to see in here:

-Eternal Darkness.

-MGS twin snakes.

-Timesplitters 2.

-Viewtiful Joe 1 and 2.

-Enter The Matrix.

And remember; the top-list is player's choice in NTSC + PAL. That means 250k times 2 = 500k minimum! (= profit?!)

Is not the "Million Seller" lists based at least in part upon information provided by the companies themselves rather than just the sales data?

Also, it is very possible for a game to sell 250K in each region without ever reaching 1M -- since there are probably no more than three regions.

Finally, it is interesting that the list here is more inclusive than what is found on Wikipedia -- which only has 26 games at 1M for the GC.

What I want to know is if Pikmin 2 came close to 1M in sales, why is it so expensive to get a second-hand copy today.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

I want to point out that Gold =/= Platinum. Gold means 500k. Platinum 1000k (or 1 million).

Also, the list is from Wikipedia, so your bold claim is ludicrous. I checked the Player's Choice list from Wikipedia. Also, I never said this was all about 'ONLY 1 million +' but rather something to show a lot of games were more succesful then this sites' sales might suggest. This is based on the Player's Choice status which means 250k in 1 region.

Supply and demand.  There are quite a few games that aren't exceptionally rare but command high prices, and some that are fairly rare but are worth little.  Lots of people want Pikmin 2 compared to the number who are willing to sell their copies, simple as that.

The same is telling of PS2 and PSP games.

You need to ship 400k and 300k in one region in order to qualify for Greatest Hits, but we have many games that well under despite being Greatest Hits!

"We'll toss the dice however they fall,
And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

Check out MyAnimeList and my Game Collection. Owner of the 5 millionth post.

We can also use Nintendo's own fiscal reports to figure out how much software was actually shipped.

Nintendo GameCube Total Software
shipped Region/VGC region

Japan - 27.53 million / 21.34 million

Americas - 138.48 million / 15.88 million (this is low because it's only for games tracked weekly)

Others - 42.55 million / ???

Total - 208.56 million / ???

---------------

I just added the software total for GameCube games in Americas that are not neccessarily tracked weekly though.

The total comes to 60.49 million.... less than half of what was shipped.

I will do "others" now.

Ok, I have done Others.... In truth I would need to do Japan too, as some games will have total sales data, but not weekly.... but at least most will in Japan, and it's too much of a task.

Shipped VGC
Japan 27.53 21.34
Americas 138.48 60.49
Others 42.55 18.88
Total 208.56 100.71
