Nintendo may not even do a Wii 2. Depends on the competition really. If MS & Sony just upgrade graphics again then Wii will simply continue to outsell the PS4 & Xbox 720. There would be no need to move to a Wii 2.

Is MS & Sony come out with consoles that directly compete with Wii for the mass market (yes, that's right people, brace yourselves for Pink PS4s and Robert Redford endorsing Xbox 720s for seniors) then Nintendo will bring out the Wii 2 to stay ahead.

No idea what a Wii 2 would be. But it'll be simple addctive fun through and through.

so what? are the small percentage of people who come online and argue over which console is better is now considered the general public?

most people i know dont see the wii as a novelty..

1.) The Casual Market is too unpredictable to say that they won't upgrade.

2.) It's very likely that the Wii's successor won't be called a Wii 2 (Taken that Nintendo has never been inclined to use 2 or 3 in the name of their consoles.)

If the Wii's successor is marketed in a similar fashion as the Wii and shows enough enhancement from its predecessor it should sell strongly. I think if the Wii's successor secures stronger third party and enough interest that it's just for "non-gamers" and "casuals" then it should sell more, provided the 360 and PS3's successors don't directly compete with it. If they do, I don't think it will.

EDIT: This may piss people off but kids are going to remember the Wii and talk about how awesome it was in their teens and earlier adulthood.  I think these will likely buy a "Wii 2."  Also a strong part of the casual market is children which are more likely to want the new "bigger and better toy" as soon as it comes out then others.

Honestly, as soon as there are no games for the Wii (or better games for "Wii 2") people will buy the new console.

Just because people aren't hardcore gamers doesn't mean they are dumb or anything. It really annoys me how you people try to tell me most of my friends are dumb and "second class gamers" because they don't like games that let you play Second World War and because they don't play for hours straight.

Jeez, 130 million people bought a PS2 and quite a lot of them "upgraded" to a Wii so why shouldn't they buy another console in 5 years?

For 15 year old people 250$ may be quite a lot of money but for a 30 year old man or woman it is really not that much. They don't have to save money for 6 months straight to buy a console they just go out and buy it.

The SNES had a huge drop in US audience verse the NES. I think casuals will need something new and exciting to buy the Wii2 and Nintendo won't even come close to delivering.

Agreed. People are not stupid, and tend to be well-educated about their purchasing decision. They will upgrade to a next-gen system when it has games that interest them, whether or not that system happens to be the Wii2.

The next Nintendo system has the potential to sell better, yes. Of course it does. It just has to come out with a lineup that smashes the "core" lineups for the other two platforms, so it can steal some portion of the current Sony and Microsoft acolytes.

I could be wrong, but I think there are a lot of people who don’t have a particularly good understanding of logical reasoning that make conclusions about the Wii’s user-base with limited (or no) evidence to support their claims.

Personally, the way I see it is there is a very tiny and very vocal minority of gamers who would never consider buying a Wii; and these gamers share a set of values that when combined make the Wii an abomination. From what I have seen these gamers tend to believe that a person would have to share none of these values in order to appreciate the Wii, and then make generalizations about the Wii’s user-base using this assumption.

The truth is that the vast majority of gamers would be willing to buy a Wii, and would appreciate it for what it is, even if they don’t own one and have no intention of buying one. Their reason for not buying one (yet or ever) could be something as simple as having another system (including something as old as the PS2) and all of their needs are fully satisfied by that system. At the same time, the vast majority of Wii owners share most of the same values (when it comes to gaming) as the most "Hardcore" Wii-Hating HD fanboy and would react to a new generation of consoles in a very similar fashion.

In other words, if Nintendo released a new system that was very similar to the Wii with a wide range of improvements and sold it at an affordable price people who owned a current generation system (including the Wii) would be interested in buying one. Whether Nintendo could match the success of the Wii depends heavily on when it is released, how much of an improvement it is, how affordable the console is, and the decisions Nintendo’s competition makes.

But the case with this was competition. America was the Genesis' strongest region. Genesis fought Nintendo on their terms, and the only reason they lost was the self-destructive behaviors with the Sega CD and the 32X, sabotaging themselves later in the game, while Nintendo stayed consistent.

If no one steps up to challenge Nintendo, then casuals will have no viable alternative. But given Microsoft's movements in that direction, it's probably inevitable that someone will challenge them

And that's what i think will happen. Someone will take on the mantle to challenge Nintendo, and the Wii 2 will wind up doing worse, but it won't be a PS3 or N64 scenario. Wii 2 will fight. The whole "casuals don't care to upgrade" thing won't work, because if we judge these people as negatively as possible, they at least want the next big thing, and if anyone can provide that kind of hook, Nintendo can. Imagine something like "Wii Sports: Team," a team sports simulation taking full advantage of more powerful physics and an even more powerful motion + system.
