Not trying to sound like a troll, but the PSOne and 2 weren't consoles based around a novelty as seen by the general public. Who knows what will happen anyway. Nintendo certainly have the money to make a truly huge leap into HD and greater power, it just depends how greedy they've become.

If fun is a novelty, then I guess the Wii is based upon that -- but so then would every other successful console.
Just because someone does not like the Wii, they should not make disparaging remarks about its user base. It is like what people used to say about NASCAR fans (stock car racing in the US, like touring car racing in Europe, except almost exclusively on ovals). Because the sport started in the Southern United States on dirt tracks among competitors who may had experience "running moonshine" (illegal alcohol), a lot of people made assumptions about its fan base. But research showed that fans at its weekly series tracks made more than the national average 15 years ago and the trend continues.
Now to the original question, many people will upgrade when it is time. Many will not. If the unit has backward compatability, I would say the likelihood is higher -- just look at PS1-2 vs PS2-3. (And upscaling B/C would be even better.)
But it is doubtful it will match Wii sales.
Of course, if it uses its cash to buy Sony, just think of all the games that the new system would have. 8*>
