Well this will be the final test for Iwata, won't it?

Yamauchi was able to make the Famicom/NES hugely successful but Nintendo declined with both the SNES and N64, largely due to silly mistakes.

If Nintendo doesn't make the same mistakes and continues to invest in the occassional quirky idea like Brain Training or Wii Fit ... they likely will continue to remain successful.

If they do something stupid ... like release a $600 console or wait too long to release the next hardware or keep rehashing the hardware with minimal upgrades ... then you have a problem.

I think Iwata can pull it off though. He seems to be a more pragmatic type of president than Yamauchi was and less prone to getting over confident.

I don’t think that success alone is what leads companies like Nintendo and Sony to become arrogant and make critical mistakes that lead to their downfall. When a company (or an individual) sees immediate and repeated success they often don’t question why they were successful, and without any understanding of their success they head off in a wrong direction.

I could be wrong but I suspect that when a company or individual has seen failure and has worked hard to regain success they are far more humble and much more willing to investigate and question what lead to their success.
