Yeah it looks really interesting, although I feel I should point out DQIX actually uses 2 2GB DS cards. http://ds.advancedmn.com/images/content/misc/dragonquest9-2carts.jpg making it the largest DS game as far as space used by quite a lot. I'm not sure which one will be released first though (both are TBA 2007 in Japan).

Wow.

That's really, really amazing.

I knew they had 1Gbit carts running (128MB), but not 2Gbit (256MB) - but using 2 of them?

Just to give a good comparison, DQIX uses up the equivalent of an entire Wii system (embedded) memory - 512MB - or close to an entire CD.

Following the normal tech improvement rates, in 3-4 years time they could fit 4-8x as much data on a cart the same size.

So imagine making a cart, say 4 times as (physically) large - with 8x the data density.  That would be a 64Gbit cart - or 8Gig - or a dual-layer DVD.

This makes me think that moving back to cart based media for Ninty's next console might not be that crazy after all. Even 4 times the size of a DS cart is still "small" - you could go 4x4x4 times larger (4xwidth, 4xheight, 4xthickness). That would deliver 128GB of data (approx 2-3 BluRay discs) on something about the size of a N64 cart.

Wonder how much this would cost to manufacture per cart... :P

Mario, Metroid and Brawl. Top 3 best looking games on the Wii IMO.

DQIX doesn't use 2 2Gb cards, that's a really bad rumor and crappy photoshop spread around like 2 weeks after the game was announced...which would have been close to a year before the game would have been done to be put on cards in the first place. The rumor refuses to die.

Just curious: what is ASH for DS? I'd google it, but, well, I can't be bothered :P

Mistwalkers Studio 1st game independent of MS's funding. Hironobu Sakaguchi of FF fame is producing, Nintendo is publishing, Sakimoto soundtrack. A translation of the gameplay mechanics by duckroll:

- The game is supposed to be more realistic and serious, hence the requirement for pre-rendered movies, sprites, and voice.

- The game's theme and tone are very different from Blue Dragon.

- It's a mix of RPG commands and Simulation RPG strategy maps. You form teams of up to 3 characters with a leader, and it's represented as a single unit on the map. You can have up to 5 teams at the same time later.

- When you engage enemies on the battlefield, instead of a one-to-one attack like in a normal strategy game, it switches to a team battle encounter like a RPG, menu driven.

- As it is a strategy RPG, everything is governed by Action Points. AP is shared between an entire team, not individual characters.

- There are two types of characters - main characters and ash warriors. Only main characters who are actual living beings and story characters can be team leaders.

- Ash warriors are considered as troops in your army which can level up and gain skills. When you're satisfied with their development you can then absorb them into a main character to transfer the powers. Absorbed ash warriors are lost forever.

- First 2 Gigabit DS rom. They really need the space.

- Like any other strategy RPG, there will be field skills that you can use on the battlefield itself, as well as support magic that allows one team to boost the stats of another team, etc.

Sounds epic.

Nintendo has 512megabyte cards now, the 2, 2gb carts were preproduction rumors (and yes the pic is of a photoshopped package). I believe there is already a 2gb game out there. Can someone confirm this? DQ9 will be the first to use the 4gb cart.

Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.

There are currently no 2Gbit games out already (or if there is, it hasn't been dumped yet).

Edit: Just out of interest, there are 97 1Gbit roms, including region dupes.

Edit 2: @Darknight_DS, 512mbyte = 4Gb. When talking about roms, it is almost always in bits. If Nintendo has any 512mbyte cards, they have yet to be seen. ASH is on a 2Gb cart, which means 256megabytes.

I think it depends on what you mean by best looking. I think Dewy's Adventure has a great art style that's very pleasing to my eyes imo, plus it's so cute! I think it should be in the top.

Btw, I read on IGN that it's much cheaper to release a game on one 4gb cartridge than on two 2gb ones. So I think the picture is fake.

True fighters don't wear socks.

I know this is kinda off topic, but this whole thread has shifted from talking about graphics to memory anyway...

Remember how Nintendo (Shiggy, I think) said he would like to see a console not attached to a TV. I see the memory price/space plunge as a step to merging home consoles with portables. The only problem I see for Nintendo in this is that it would be bad for business, only having one hardware product.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

Rumour reporter.com said many a times that the 2-carts rumour was BS. And the developers were once asked that very question and said that DQIX will fit on one DS cart.

It is a hardcore game through and through. You will get your ass kicked by bosses. You will be stumped by the sometimes complex, but never overbearing, exploration.
