Yeah it looks really interesting, although I feel I should point out DQIX actually uses 2 2GB DS cards. http://ds.advancedmn.com/images/content/misc/dragonquest9-2carts.jpg making it the largest DS game as far as space used by quite a lot. I'm not sure which one will be released first though (both are TBA 2007 in Japan). |
Wow.
That's really, really amazing.
I knew they had 1Gbit carts running (128MB), but not 2Gbit (256MB) - but using 2 of them?
Just to give a good comparison, DQIX uses up the equivalent of an entire Wii system (embedded) memory - 512MB - or close to an entire CD.
Following the normal tech improvement rates, in 3-4 years time they could fit 4-8x as much data on a cart the same size.
So imagine making a cart, say 4 times as (physically) large - with 8x the data density. That would be a 64Gbit cart - or 8Gig - or a dual-layer DVD.
This makes me think that moving back to cart based media for Ninty's next console might not be that crazy after all. Even 4 times the size of a DS cart is still "small" - you could go 4x4x4 times larger (4xwidth, 4xheight, 4xthickness). That would deliver 128GB of data (approx 2-3 BluRay discs) on something about the size of a N64 cart.
Wonder how much this would cost to manufacture per cart... :P
