Big budget does not make a game hardcore, or even good for that matter. There are lots of games that are awesome without having killer budgets. Thank god for that.

Kudo's

4 ≈ One

All it will mean is fewer new IPs, and scaling back of 2nd-string franchises. EA, TakeTwo, THQ, and Midway said it. The failures of the year were stuff like Burnout Paradise, Dead Space, and Mirror's Edge (remember, EA projected 3 million 1st-year sales for Mirror's Edge)

The big-name stuff will stay, but you're not going to see oversaturation of big-budget titles like you did this holiday season

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

A number of high profile publishers

Examples? EA perhaps LOL. Everytime I hear high profile in these surroundings its a doomed company like Midway or whatever. As long as 360 and Ps3 games sell as they do we shouldn't have a problem. Those "high profile" publishers will see that they will have problems selling the 26 Game Party, Carnival games whatever.

There are simply not that many damn mini-games you can put into a package.

Personally I like the complex input scheme of the PS3/360 because it allows almost PC like games (and has brought some of the best games ever to those consoles). On the other hand it may not be a bad thing that a new variety of games comes up that doesn't utilize 17 buttons + 2 analog sticks, because this is really hard for newcomers.

On the other hand similar to movies, big-budget titles with cinematic looks and a good director, writer etc. are the future. They may simply not be as complex to control. Oh and a horde of minigames and attachements will also have their place.

No.

Will hard-core games cease to exist? No. There is a market, and that market is profitable. Has been for a while, otherwise companies would have gotten out a while ago. Hence there will be suppliers to that market.

Are hard-core games the main focus anymore? Well, no. But don't kid yourself, hard-core games haven't been the focus for a long time. Just go look at the game collection at your local video game store that sells used titles. We have been a small subset of the total consumer base stretching back to at least the last console generation, if not further. Especially if you consider games like Guitar Hero and World of Warcraft not to be hard-core games. Besides, what's your definition of hard-core? Do you include games like the Final Fantasy and Mario series, which hard-core players do play, but whose sales are dominated by what are now known as casual gamers?

You'll still see the traditional HD blockbusters, albiet in smaller quanities - But would missing games like Fracture really be a waste?

Those that do stay with the formula are likely to be rewarded since there'll be less competition, so it's a win-win.

What he said, I am not concened about thining out the chaff, and us HD gamers will still see the Call of Duties and of course tons of content from Sony and to a lesser extent M$, there is no need for panick

*me from the year 2010* *playing No More Heroes 2* Wait? I'm not playing this core title right now?

/this is all

So fewer big games with high production values and tons and tons of cheap shovelware is the future ?

Yes, Microsoft is going to stop making Halo, one of the biggest selling games ever and everyones going to be making Puzzle Quest clones, a game that sells awfully in the first place.

Oh wait, no. This thread is fucking stupid. Proper games are still outselling cheap shovelware by miles. Ever stopped to think that developers take pride in their work and want to create good games? Fewer people than you think are happy to create shit games just to make a profit for their publishers.

You know how many big budget disasters have lost companies so much money this generations? Haze, Stranglehold, Too Human, etc.? I stopped there, since I would have ended up with a huge list by the time I was done. Developers are simply scaling back on niche, unpopular HD series. Don't expect to see another NBA Ballers or NFL Blitz game this gen, at least not on the HD consoles. But we can still expect to see more of the high quality, high selling games we've already seen. And if a developer feels like being different, maybe they can approach the console makers themselves.
