Forums - Sales - Will Next-Gen Consoles ALL Come With A Bundle?

They will.

Everything points to visually operated games next gen. Just listen to Bill Gates and other microsoft reps talk about how games will be controlled in the future. Well, that future is next gen, and they'll need a demo game to come with it just as wii did.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

I guess it easier to coax someone to buya console if it plays something out of the box than plonk down $300 and further another $60 on a title.

Simple, cheap and good PR for companies.

Bundle a game, developer happy, publisher happy, console maker happy, consumer happy..

win win

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd.

5 THINGS I'd like to see before i knock out:

a. a AAA 3D sonic title

b. a nintendo developed game that has a "M rating"

c. redesgined PS controller

d. SEGA back in the console business

e. M$ out of the OS business

Will all next-gen consoles come with a bundle? They should, but you need to have that one amazing era-defining game for it to really matter.

Nintendo has managed that 3 times, with the SMB/Duck Hunt bundle on NES, the Wii Sports bundle on Wii AND let's not forget the Tetris bundle on Gameboy.

I would argue that these 3 bundles are the most important reasons for Nintendo's success as a video game company. SMB, Tetris and Wii Sports were reasons alone to own these systems.

If you can come up with something equally revolutionary (which is very very hard) for the next generation, bundle it with all new consoles, and success is ensured.

The console market has always been about having THE killer app.

They wont enter motion control war, and you can quote me on this. Also, sure they are looking for first place, but they aren't expecting it or desire it as much as Sony, simply because they havent been at the top yet. if they ever reach that place, then good for them, but for now, MS is simply in it for the cash, something they are doing quiet well.

Sony has already entered the motion war with the six axis. Microsoft aren't in it for the money directly, they only joined to stop Sony's dominance of the living room. I think MS will now be aiming their sights at Nintendo for the same reasons as they did with Sony. MS will start to do motion, you can quote me on this.

Which is why the SIXAXIS isn't standard in new PS3 consoles right?

@bdbdbd - pad controls haven't been ditched. People still even use the GC controls on the Wii, 28M people use the 360's pad and over half the PS3 owners don't have the SIXAXIS, they have the Dual Shock 3. MS won't jump into motion controls unless they innovate past what the concept of the Wii Mote is, something I don't see happening next gen, maybe the one after, if at all.

@Pete Beast: And since Dual Shock 3 is Sixaxis with rumble, i'm having trouble in seening your point.
As i said already, M$ is already doing their test on how the market reacts; Lips has motion sensitive mics. The problem with M$ with not yet having their own "general use" motion controller is that they are more interted in taking down PS3 than to fight a costly fight with Wii - and to lose it. Besides, any of their "big games" didn't support the peripheral (which usually aren't very successful), so it's better to focus on next gen and to a fight where you actually have a chance to fight.

In current gen hardware sales, after Wiis release, Wii has more than 50% marketshare. Also notice that a number of PS3:s have been bought as a BD player. The key in Wiis success, is the games that take advantage of the motion controls and by judging the sales, the motion controls section is winning. MKWii, Brawl and RE4 can be played with the GC controller, out of the big named games, but judging by the overall games sales, people who buy these games, are the ones who buy a lot more games too - that use the motion controls.
I doubt M$ and Sony are so blind to see what and how drives Wii sales, so they unlikely stick to pads next gen.

Looking at a trend, Nintendo consoles with bundles have had success (NES and Wii). Including a game with the console seems to make it sell, even if it's just a bit more than if it wasn't bundled. Now, Sony and MS will most likely participate in the next gen. Do you think that it's possible that these companies will also be adding a bundle to their next console?

Regardless of industry, companys often look to mimic the successes of their competitors. The thing that is so very difficult to predict is what any given company might attribute their competitor's success to. Think of all the things that differentiate the Wii from the PS3/360 - any of those differences might seem crucial (or alternatively unimportant) to whomever at MS/Sony ends up having the final word on their next console.

Just off the top of my head here's a list of things that MS and Sony might think to immitate about the Wii:

  • controller
  • focus on casual gaming
  • price
  • lack of focus on graphics
  • lack of focus on media
  • lack of HDD
  • free online
  • safe online
  • bundled game
  • game bundled with controller
  • balance board
  • party games

Notice what it says on top of the dual shock 3 controller.
