There are a few things I don't understand about the IGN scores:
Wii: 8.5 Presentation
The Madden franchise has always been a powerhouse of football goodness, and this is no different. Updated rosters, new modes, clean interface, team-based playbooks, and more.
360 / PS3: 7.0 Presentation
Once a strength of the franchise, Madden 08 falls flat in terms of offering the feel of a televised NFL game. What's the point in having the ESPN license if it's barely used?
- Do the 360 and PS3 have "updated rosters, new modes, clean interface, team-based playbooks, and more" or not? Does the Wii version feel more like a televised NFL game, and why? Does the Wii "use the ESPN license" more than the 360 and PS3 versions?
Wii: 8.5 Sound
Stronger than last year, but just barely. The soundtrack offers over 40 tunes, and it’s a pretty solid mix of rock, rap, and punk. Expected Wii-mote audio still remains too.
360 / PS3: 7.5 Sound
The radio play-by-play is disappointing. There's some good smack talk on the field and you can really hear the crunch of a big hit. The crowd AI is often confused.
- Do the 360 and PS3 versions also offer over 40 tunes? Does the Wii version have different radio play-by-play and different crowd AI than the other two?
Wii: 7.0 Graphics
It’s a slight bump from last year, but still not nearly up to par. Madden looks like a PS2 game with a few improvements, rather than a true Wii experience.
PS3: 6.5 Graphics
The details are good, but Madden is ugly in motion. It's optimistic to call this a game that runs at 30fps. The animations don't look that great because of the lower framerate.
- Does the PS3 version look like a PS2 game? What FPS does the Wii version run at?
Are these three games being judged on different scales for some reason?
We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai
It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps
We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games. - Activision CEO Bobby Kotick
